MONTREAL – McGill University student Alexandre Gagné has been selected by Hockey Canada as one of eight referees to officiate at the 2026 Ivan Hlinka–Wayne Gretzky Cup, an elite international under-18 men's hockey tournament scheduled for Aug. 3-8 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
 
A native of Hudson, Que., Gagné enrolled at McGill in 2024 after graduating from John Abbott College. He will enter his third year this fall as a finance major in the Desautels Faculty of Management.
 
Gagné is among eight officials selected to work the annual showcase, one of the world's premier under-18 tournaments, featuring many of the top NHL prospects from Canada, the United States, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Switzerland and Germany.
 
"Alexandre is an outstanding young referee who excels both on the ice and in the classroom," said Doug Hayward, a supervisor of officials with Hockey Québec and Hockey Canada who has helped develop numerous NHL officials. "He has moved quickly up the ranks, refereeing games at the midget AAA level, in the Quebec Junior AAA League, the QMJHL, U SPORTS, the ECHL and the American Hockey League."
 
Gagné said his officiating career began as a way to earn some spending money.

"I started officiating minor hockey at the age of 13 in the Vaudreuil Hockey Association to make money while still playing," he said. "Officiating allowed me to create my own schedule while continuing to play competitive hockey."
 
He credits two retired NHL referees from the Lac-Saint-Louis region with inspiring his development.
 
"Marc Joannette and Pierre Racicot are both highly respected retired NHL referees who grew up officiating in the Lac-Saint-Louis region and paved the way for young officials in my area," said Gagné.
 
Gagné has steadily advanced through the officiating ranks while balancing the demands of a full-time university education.
 
His appointment continues a growing tradition of McGill students advancing through Hockey Canada's officiating pathway. He is the second McGillian currently working at the highest levels of the game, following Anthony Lapointe, a recent physical education graduate who recently signed a contract to work as an NHL linesperson beginning this season.
 
The Hlinka-Gretzky Cup assignment marks Gagné's first international appointment for Hockey Canada and is considered a significant milestone in the organization's officiating development pathway. The tournament annually showcases many of the world's top under-18 players, including numerous future NHL first-round NHL Draft picks.

Other referees joining Gagné at this week's tourney include Yannick Jobin-Manseau (Hockey Québec), Josh Grimm (Hockey Saskatchewan), Jack Robinson (Hockey PEI), Ben Solomon (Hockey Alberta) and the trio of David Elford, Damian Figueira and Connor McCracken, from the Ontario Hockey Federation, .

L'étudiant en finance Alexandre Gagné retenu parmi les huit arbitres sélectionnés pour la Coupe Hlinka-Gretzky
 
MONTRÉAL – L'étudiant de l'Université McGill Alexandre Gagné a été sélectionné par Hockey Canada parmi les huit arbitres qui officieront à la Coupe Ivan-Hlinka–Wayne-Gretzky 2026, un prestigieux tournoi international masculin des moins de 18 ans qui se déroulera du 3 au 8 août au Rogers Place, à Edmonton.
 
Originaire de Hudson, au Québec, Gagné a entrepris ses études à McGill en 2024 après avoir obtenu son diplôme du Collège John Abbott. Il amorcera cet automne sa troisième année au baccalauréat en finance à la Faculté de gestion Desautels.
 
Gagné fait partie des huit officiels retenus pour ce rendez-vous annuel, considéré comme l'un des plus importants tournois internationaux de hockey chez les moins de 18 ans. La compétition réunira plusieurs des meilleurs espoirs en vue du repêchage de la LNH provenant du Canada, des États-Unis, de la Suède, de la Finlande, de la Slovaquie, de la Suisse et de l'Allemagne.
 
« Alexandre est un jeune arbitre exceptionnel qui excelle autant sur la glace que dans ses études », a déclaré Doug Hayward, superviseur des officiels pour Hockey Québec et Hockey Canada, qui a contribué à la formation de nombreux arbitres de la LNH. « Il a rapidement gravi les échelons, dirigeant des matchs au niveau midget AAA, dans la Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec, la LHJMQ, U SPORTS, l'ECHL et la Ligue américaine de hockey. »
 
Gagné explique que sa carrière d'arbitre a débuté comme un moyen de gagner un peu d'argent.
 
« J'ai commencé à arbitrer le hockey mineur à l'âge de 13 ans au sein de l'Association de hockey de Vaudreuil afin de gagner un peu d'argent tout en continuant à jouer, a-t-il raconté. L'arbitrage me permettait d'établir mon propre horaire tout en poursuivant ma carrière de joueur. »
 
Il attribue une bonne part de son développement à deux anciens arbitres de la LNH originaires de la région du Lac-Saint-Louis.
 
« Marc Joannette et Pierre Racicot sont deux anciens arbitres de la LNH hautement respectés qui ont grandi dans la région du Lac-Saint-Louis et ont ouvert la voie aux jeunes officiels de notre région », a ajouté Gagné.
 
Tout en poursuivant des études universitaires à temps plein, Gagné a gravi régulièrement les échelons de l'arbitrage jusqu'aux plus hauts niveaux du hockey.
 
Sa nomination s'inscrit dans une tradition grandissante d'étudiants de McGill qui progressent au sein du programme de développement des officiels de Hockey Canada. Il est actuellement le deuxième McGillois à œuvrer au plus haut niveau, après Anthony Lapointe, récent diplômé en éducation physique, qui a récemment signé un contrat avec la LNH à titre de juge de lignes pour la prochaine saison.
 
Cette désignation à la Coupe Ivan-Hlinka-Gretzky constitue une première affectation internationale pour Gagné avec Hockey Canada et représente une étape importante dans son cheminement au sein du programme de développement des officiels de l'organisation. Chaque année, le tournoi réunit plusieurs des meilleurs joueurs de moins de 18 ans au monde, dont de nombreux futurs choix de première ronde du repêchage de la LNH.

Les autres arbitres sélectionnés pour ce tournoi sont Yannick Jobin-Manseau (Hockey Québec), David Elford, Damian Figueira et Connor McCracken, tous trois de la Fédération de hockey de l'Ontario, Josh Grimm (Hockey Saskatchewan), Jack Robinson (Hockey Île-du-Prince-Édouard) et Ben Solomon (Hockey Alberta).
