QUEBEC CITY — The McGill Martlets continued their long-running dominance Saturday, winning the RSEQ's fourth  University Cup meet of the season and extending their streak of dominance  to a mind-boggling 23 consecutive conference meet victories, dating back to 2020, when McGill last finished second at the fourth meet, also in Quebec City.

The McGill women finished first of seven schools overall, at the Centre PEPS short-course pool, with 512 points, ahead of Ottawa (286), Laval (263), the Montreal Carabins (260), Sherbrooke (138), UQTR (31) and UQAR (0).  In 10 races, the Martlets posted 12 podium finishes, collecting four medals of each colour.

The women's swimmer of the meet honours went to Laval's Raphaëlle Tremblay, who won three gold medals and one silver while registering 652 points on the FINA scale to finish ahead of McGill's Rebecca McGrath (588.5) and Emilia Mastromatteo (574.5) in the overall scoring race.

McGill set the tone early by winning the opening event, the 4x100 medley relay. McGrath, Mélanie Di Maria, Mastromatteo and Maya McGhan combined for a time of 4:06.21, establishing a new McGill team record by more than a second. The previous mark was 4:07.35 set last fall at the U of T dual meet on Nov. 16.

McGrath went on to win gold in the 50 freestyle, while Mastromatteo dominated the breaststroke races with victories in the 50 and 100. McGhan added another gold by winning the 200 individual medley, and McGill's final victory came in the distance events when Emilie de Chazal captured the 800 freestyle.

Silver medals came from Harper Lipton in the 200 freestyle, McGrath in the 200 backstroke, De Chazal in the 100 butterfly, and McGill's top 4x100 freestyle relay. Bronze medals were added by Beatrice Weiss-Reid, Natasha Frost, Aria Fortier and McGhan.

McGill head coach Peter Carpenter highlighted the opening relay as a key moment.

"The major highlight was the women's 400 medley relay that started the meet off with a new team record by over a second," he said. "I think that relay can likely go another 1.5 to two seconds faster and I like their chances of medalling at nationals."

McGill's next competition will be the RSEQ conference championships in Sherbrooke from Feb. 13–15, where the Martlets will be looking for a sixth straight RSEQ championship banner.

Les Martlets prolongent leur série à 23 victoires consécutives en championnat lors de la 4e Coupe à Québec

Le record de l'école tombe dans le 4x100 MR avec McGrath, Di Maria, Mastromatteo et McGhan (4:06.21)

QUÉBEC — Les Martlets de McGill ont poursuivi samedi leur longue domination en remportant la quatrième rencontre universitaire de la saison du RSEQ et en prolongeant leur série de victoires à 23 rencontres consécutives, une performance époustouflante qui remonte à 2020, lorsque McGill avait terminé deuxième lors de la quatrième rencontre, également à Québec.

Les femmes de McGill ont terminé premières sur sept écoles au total, à la piscine courte du Centre PEPS, avec 512 points, devant Ottawa (286), Laval (263), les Carabins de Montréal (260), Sherbrooke (138), l'UQTR (31) et l'UQAR (0). En 10 courses, les Martlets ont décroché 12 podiums, remportant quatre médailles de chaque couleur.

Le titre de nageuse de la rencontre a été décerné à Raphaëlle Tremblay, de Laval, qui a remporté trois médailles d'or et une d'argent, tout en enregistrant 652 points sur l'échelle FINA, devançant ainsi Rebecca McGrath (588.5)  et Emilia Mastromatteo  (574.5), de McGill, au classement général.

McGill a donné le ton dès le début en remportant l'épreuve d'ouverture, le relais 4 x 100 m quatre nages. McGrath, Mélanie Di Maria, Mastromatteo et Maya McGhan ont réalisé un temps combiné de 4:06,21, établissant un nouveau record de l'équipe McGill de plus d'une seconde. L'ancienne marque était de 4:07,35, établie l'automne dernier lors de la rencontre double de l'Université de Toronto le 16 novembre.

McGrath a ensuite remporté l'or au 50 m nage libre, tandis que Mastromatteo a dominé les épreuves de brasse en s'imposant au 50 m et au 100 m. McGhan a ajouté une autre médaille d'or en remportant le 200 m quatre nages individuel, et la dernière victoire de McGill est venue dans les épreuves de fond, lorsque Emilie de Chazal s'est imposée au 800 m nage libre.

Les médailles d'argent ont été remportées par Harper Lipton au 200 mètres nage libre, McGrath au 200 mètres dos, De Chazal au 100 mètres papillon et le relais 4 x 100 mètres nage libre de McGill. Les médailles de bronze ont été remportées par Beatrice Weiss-Reid, Natasha Frost, Aria Fortier et McGhan.

L'entraîneur principal de McGill, Peter Carpenter, a souligné que le relais d'ouverture avait été un moment clé.

« Le moment fort a été le relais 400 m quatre nages féminin qui a débuté la compétition avec un nouveau record d'équipe de plus d'une seconde, a-t-il déclaré. Je pense que ce relais peut probablement gagner encore 1,5 à 2 secondes et j'aime leurs chances de remporter une médaille aux championnats nationaux. »

La prochaine compétition de McGill sera le championnat de la RSEQ à Sherbrooke du 13 au 15 février, où les Martlets tenteront de remporter leur sixième titre consécutif.
