MONTREAL — McGill's women delivered a powerful opening-day performance Friday at the 29th annual McGill Team Challenge, highlighted by four podium finishes and a commanding lead in the team standings at the Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse.
The Martlets were led by
Julie Bortolato, a 20-year-old cognitive science sophomore from Mountain View, Calif., who captured gold in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.50 metres to secure McGill's lone victory of the day. She was within reach of the school record of 3.65. Bortolato was followed on the podium by Laval teammates Chloe Robitaille (3.10) and Sarah-Maude Cloutier (3.00).
On the track, McGill earned silver in the women's 4x800-metre relay, finishing second in 9:11.32 behind the winning team from Queen's (9:07.70). The Martlets foursome included leadoff runner
Marie Billaud, a second-year doctorate student from France, followed by junior
Arowyn Fitzpatrick of Mono, Ont., sophomore
Emma Veilleux of Montreal and
Julia Berube-Boutin, a second-year master's student in neuroscience who hails from Toronto.
Co-captain
Rebecca Warcholak, a science junior from Toronto, added another runner-up performance in the field with silver in the triple jump (11.72 m).
The Martlets also climbed the podium in the throws, as
Ella Villeneuve, a sciene senior from Richmond, Vermont, secured bronze in the hammer throw, rounding out McGill's Day 1 medal haul.
After Friday's competition, the McGill women sit first of 16 teams overall with 68 points, holding an 11-point advantage over second-place Montréal, and is well positioned heading into Saturday's conclusion.

Bortolato propulse les Martlets en tête après la première journée du McGill Team Challenge
Une médaille d'or, deux d'argent et une de bronze permettent à McGill de prendre la tête après la première journée de la compétition d'athlétisme
MONTRÉAL — Les femmes de McGill ont réalisé une performance impressionnante vendredi lors de la première journée du 29e McGill Team Challenge annuel, avec quatre podiums et une avance confortable au classement par équipe au Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse.
Les Martlets étaient menées par Julie Bortolato, une étudiante de deuxième année en sciences cognitives âgée de 20 ans originaire de Mountainview, en Californie, qui a remporté la médaille d'or au saut à la perche féminin, franchissant 3,50 mètres pour assurer la seule victoire de McGill ce jour-là. Elle était à deux doigts du record universitaire de 3,65 mètres. Bortolato a été suivie sur le podium par ses coéquipières de Laval, Chloé Robitaille (3,10 mètres) et Sarah-Maude Cloutier (3,00 mètres).
Sur la piste, McGill a remporté la médaille d'argent au relais 4 x 800 mètres féminin, terminant deuxième en 9:11,32 derrière l'équipe gagnante de Queen's (9:07,70). Le quatuor des Martlets comprenait la première relayeuse Marie Billaud, une étudiante française en deuxième année de doctorat, suivie de la junior Arowyn Fitzpatrick de Mono, en Ontario, de la sophomore Emma Veilleux de Montréal et de Julia Berube-Boutin, une étudiante en deuxième année de maîtrise en neurosciences originaire de Toronto.
La co-capitaine Rebecca Warcholak, étudiante de troisième année en sciences originaire de Toronto, a ajouté une autre deuxième place dans le domaine avec l'argent au triple saut (11,72 m).
Les Martlets sont également montées sur le podium dans les lancers, Ella Villeneuve, étudiante en sciences de Richmond, dans le Vermont, ayant remporté la médaille de bronze au lancer du marteau, complétant ainsi le palmarès de McGill pour la première journée.
Après la compétition de vendredi, les femmes de McGill occupent la première place sur 16 équipes avec 68 points, détenant une avance de 11 points sur Montréal, deuxième, et sont bien placées pour aborder la conclusion de samedi.
