A golden finish for the ages as Redbirds rewrite history with two relay records on Day 1 of McGill Team Challenge track meet

Four decade old mark falls, McGill men shine in relays to sit tied for second after opening day of Team Challenge Meet

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL — The McGill Redbirds closed out a spectacular opening day of the 29th annual McGill Team Challenge on Friday night by rewriting the school record book twice, as they capped Day 1 with a pair of gold-medal relay performances at the Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse.

The first record fell in the men's 4x800 metres, capturing gold in 7:34.76 to finish ahead of Queen's (7:38.98) and Sherbrooke (7:48.21). The record-breaking lineup included senior Sean Adams of State College, Pa., junior Sacha Dernoncourt of Baton Rouge, junior Samuel Hepworth of Montreal and sophomore Ben Gates of Regina. McGill's time, the fifth fastest in U SPORTS this season, shattered the school standard of 7:37.39 set in 2025 at Ottawa's flat track, and was fractions shy of the meet record (7:34.54) held by Victoria.

Moments later, the Redbirds struck again in the final event of the evening, the 4x200 relay, where McGill stormed to victory in 1:27.63, edging Montréal (1:27.98) and Laval (1:28.26). The gold-medal quartet featured senior Luca Nicoletti of Ottawa on the opening leg, followed by junior Jay Yetman of Ottawa, junior Krescyn Moonsamy of Nanaimo, B.C., and William Sanders, a sophomore from Ottawa, on the anchor. Their time was the sixth quickest in the nation this season and just shy of the meet record (1:26.80) but erased a 40-year-old school mark of 1:27.92, set in 1986 by current head coach Dennis Barrett, along with his then teammates Orlando Haughton, Pedro Bradshaw and Jimson Lee.

"The 4x200 is really about getting to the (lane) cut-in (area) first because you basically run in your lane for the first lap and then you run an extra 100 metres in (the inside) lanes," said McGill sprints coach Tyrone Edge. "It's a drag race to be first at the cut-in so the guys had to have a really hot opening 200 and Luca ran a ridiculous lead-off lap and had a really good exchange with Jay Yetman.

"Jay was well out front on the second leg so we had clear track which allowed us to build some real good momentum in those first two legs, had a good exchange and stayed on the rail for the third leg. Then we lost a position, but we also had a great exchange on the fourth leg and Will Sanders closed nicely. It was just all-around a really great effort. It's something that I've been talking about and razzing Dennis about and the other guys on that ancient record. I've been razzing them for a couple years, saying 'these guys are coming for your record' and it's nice to see that they finally did. I think it shows that our sprint program has progressed nicely over the last few years."

Although the relays stole the show, McGill picked up an additional podium finish with Hepworth earning silver in the men's 1000m (2:23.77), behind gold medal winner Zach James of the Dalhousie Tigers (2:23.31).

After Day 1, the Redbirds are tied with Laval for second place among 17 teams, with 48 points, just five behind leader Dalhousie (53), and firmly in position to challenge for the overall team title heading into Saturday.
