WINNIPEG — Robert Gerstner and Samuel Hepworth each earned silver medals and McGill broke a school relay record en route to a 10th-place finish in the men's division at the U SPORTS indoor track and field championships, a three-day meet which concluded Saturday at the James Daly Fieldhouse.
Both athletes earned second-team All-Canadian status, an honour awarded to silver medalists at the national meet. It marks the first time since 2015 that McGill's men have produced at least two silver medalists at the same championship. Since 1983, when current head coach Dennis Barrett achieved second-team honours, the program has produced 22 total All-Canadians, six of them gold medalists at nationals.
Gerstner, a 24-year-old second-year master's student in physics from East St. Paul, Man., finished second in the long jump with a mark of 7.46 metres. His leap was just shy of the school record (7.56m) that he set at the same venue earlier in the semester. He was edged out for gold by cancer survivor Arman Shahzadeh of the Western Mustangs, who leaped 7.56m
Hepworth, a 22-year-old Montrealer and psychology junior, placed second in the 1500 metres in 3:49.62. Teammate Sacha Dernoncourt, who hails from Metz, in France, finished fourth in 3:49.91.
Sean Adams of Boalsburg, Pa., Ben Gates of Regina, Sask., Hepworth and Dernoncourt combined to eclipse their own school record in the 4x800-metre relay, finishing fourth in 7:31.54. The podium spots went to UNB (7:29.41), Laval (7:29.99) and Windsor (7:30.20). McGill's time erased the previous school best of 7:32. 71 that was established as an RSEQ record at the league championship meet two weeks ago. But that league record now belongs to Laval.
McGill's middle-distance group scored points in the 1000m, where Dernoncourt placed fourth in 2:24.86, Hepworth was seventh in 2:25.36 and Adams finished 12th in 2:29.71.
In other relay action, the 4x400 team of Luca Nicoletti (Ottawa), Adams, Jay Yetman (Ottawa) and Gates placed ninth in 3:18.40. The Redbirds' speedy 4x200 relay squad did not finish due to a medical scratch for William Sanders, the team's 300m record holder.
The Western Mustangs won the national men's title in dramatic fashion. An extensive protest in the 4x200 relay resulted in Guelph being disqualified from the race due to obstruction. Originally in first, their DQ shifted them to third with 56 points, propelling the Mustangs from third, with 58, to first with 64.
Alberta finished second in the overall standings with 60.5 points on the men's side, aided by an incredible weekend from Ryder Rattee, who was named athlete of the meet after collecting gold medals in the 300m, 600m and as part of the 4x400 relay.
Laval, the RSEQ champions, was the top Quebec school and finished ninth with 34 points, one ahead of McGill (33). Other RSEQ teams included Ottawa (11th, 23 pts), Sherbrooke (14th, 17), Montreal (18th, 12) and Concordia (24th, 1 point).
The Redbirds, who broke nine school records over the season, ended up qualifying nine athletes for nationals, a group that included Adams, Dernoncourt, Gates, Gerstner, Hepworth, Krescyn Moonsamy, Nicoletti, Sanders and Yetman.
Caroline Ehrhardt of the Mustangs received coach of the year honours and a national title in her first year after taking over from the legendary Vickie Croley. Western came into nationals ranked No. 4 in the country, but it all came together over the weekend. They collected points in eight different events, with four podiums, including their bronze medal result in the 4x200 that pushed them ahead of Guelph.
Western's Jackson Mackay was named as rookie of the year in track, and has the rare distinction of few athletes to merit top rookie honours in two sports. Last fall, he was voted rookie of the year in OUA football. He secured gold in the heptathlon with a U SPORTS championship meet record 5,607 points.

CHAMPIONNATS D'ATHLÉTISME U SPORTS : Gerstner et Hepworth décrochent l'argent, McGill termine 10e au pays
Les deux athlètes obtiennent le statut d'All-Canadien de deuxième équipe; le relais 4x800 de McGill établit un nouveau record universitaire
WINNIPEG — Robert Gerstner et Samuel Hepworth ont chacun remporté une médaille d'argent et McGill a battu un record d'école au relais en route vers une 10e place au classement masculin des Championnats canadiens universitaires d'athlétisme en salle U SPORTS, une compétition de trois jours qui a pris fin samedi au James Daly Fieldhouse.
Les deux athlètes ont été nommés sur la deuxième équipe d'étoiles canadiennes (All-Canadiens), un honneur attribué aux médaillés d'argent aux championnats nationaux. Il s'agit d'une première depuis 2015 que les Redbirds comptent au moins deux vice-champions lors d'un même championnat. Depuis 1983 — année où l'actuel entraîneur-chef Dennis Barrett avait lui-même obtenu une sélection sur la deuxième équipe — le programme masculin de McGill a produit 22 All-Canadiens, dont six champions nationaux.
Gerstner, étudiant de 24 ans à la maîtrise en physique et originaire d'East St. Paul, au Manitoba, a pris le deuxième rang au saut en longueur grâce à un bond de 7,46 m. Il a frôlé son propre record d'école (7,56 m), établi plus tôt cette saison au même endroit. Il a été devancé par Arman Shahzadeh des Mustangs de Western, survivant du cancer, qui a aussi atteint 7,56 m pour l'or.
Hepworth, Montréalais de 22 ans inscrit en psychologie, a terminé deuxième au 1 500 m en 3 min 49,62 s. Son coéquipier Sacha Dernoncourt, originaire de Metz en France, a pris le quatrième rang en 3:49,91.
Sean Adams (Boalsburg, Pennsylvanie), Ben Gates (Regina, Saskatchewan), Hepworth et Dernoncourt ont uni leurs efforts pour abaisser leur propre record d'école au relais 4x800 m, terminant quatrièmes en 7:31,54. Le podium est allé à l'UNB (7:29,41), Laval (7:29,99) et Windsor (7:30,20). Le chrono de McGill efface l'ancienne marque universitaire de 7:32,71, qui constituait également un record du RSEQ établi il y a deux semaines lors du championnat provincial. Ce record appartient maintenant à Laval.
Le groupe de demi-fond des Redbirds a aussi amassé des points au 1 000 m, où Dernoncourt a fini quatrième (2:24,86), Hepworth septième (2:25,36) et Adams 12e (2:29,71).
Au relais 4x400 m, Luca Nicoletti (Ottawa), Adams, Jay Yetman (Ottawa) et Gates ont pris le neuvième rang en 3:18,40. Le rapide quatuor du 4x200 m n'a pas complété l'épreuve en raison d'un forfait médical de William Sanders, détenteur du record d'équipe au 300 m.
Les Mustangs de Western ont remporté le titre national masculin dans des circonstances dramatiques. Une longue contestation au relais 4x200 m a mené à la disqualification de Guelph pour obstruction. Initialement premiers, les Gryphons ont été relégués au troisième rang avec 56 points, ce qui a permis aux Mustangs de passer de la troisième place (58 points) à la première avec 64.
L'Alberta a terminé deuxième avec 60,5 points, notamment grâce à la performance remarquable de Ryder Rattee, nommé athlète de la rencontre après avoir décroché l'or au 300 m, au 600 m et au relais 4x400 m.
Laval, champion du RSEQ, a été la meilleure formation québécoise avec une neuvième place (34 points), un point devant McGill (33). Parmi les autres équipes du RSEQ, on retrouve Ottawa (11e, 23 points), Sherbrooke (14e, 17), Montréal (18e, 12) et Concordia (24e, 1).
Les Redbirds, qui ont établi neuf records d'école au cours de la saison, ont qualifié neuf athlètes pour les nationaux : Adams, Dernoncourt, Gates, Gerstner, Hepworth, Krescyn Moonsamy, Nicoletti, Sanders et Yetman.
Caroline Ehrhardt des Mustangs a été nommée entraîneuse de l'année, remportant également le titre national dès sa première saison à la barre de l'équipe, après avoir succédé à la légendaire Vickie Crowley. Western, classée quatrième au pays avant la compétition, a su élever son niveau de jeu le week-end dernier, récoltant des points dans huit épreuves différentes et montant sur le podium à quatre reprises, dont une médaille de bronze au relais 4x200 m qui a fait la différence au classement final.
Le recrue de l'année en athlétisme, Jackson Mackay de Western, s'est également illustré en remportant l'heptathlon avec un record des championnats U SPORTS de 5 607 points. Il fait partie du cercle restreint d'athlètes ayant été nommé recrue de l'année dans deux sports, lui qui avait aussi reçu cet honneur au football de l'OUA l'automne dernier.
