WINNIPEG — Julie Bortolato recorded a fifth-place finish in the pole vault and the McGill's women's relay squad broke a school record at the 2026 U SPORTS indoor track and field championships, a three-day meet that concluded Saturday at the James Daly Fieldhouse.
Bortolato, a 20-year-old cognitive science sophomore from Mountain View, Calif., cleared 3.70 metres to account for four of McGill's six team points in the team scoring. Her jump was six centimetres shy of the school record that she set at the RSEQ championships two weeks ago. She tied York's Alina Bilenko at that height but placed ahead on countback, finishing just 10 centimetres shy of fourth place.
McGill's 4x400-metre relay added the remaining two points with a seventh-place national finish in 3:50.41, which erased the school record of 3:52.54 that they set at the conference championships. The quartet of Ashleigh Brown (Brampton, Ont.), Jade Jones (Toronto), Emma Veilleux (Montreal) and Natalya Babkine (Montreal West, Que.) narrowly missed sixth, finishing just 0.04 seconds behind Laval (3:50.45) in a tightly contested race.
Rebecca Warcholak of Toronto also represented the Martlets in the field events, placing 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 11.35 metres.
The Martlets set three school records this season and qualified six athletes for nationals, competing across sprints, hurdles, middle distance, horizontal jumps and pole vault. McGill finished tied for 20th of 25 schools overall with six points. The Martlets were within striking distance of moving up the standings, just one point behind the Université de Montréal and three back of Sherbrooke.
The Guelph Gryphons captured their seventh national title in eight years with 105 points, followed by Saskatchewan (79) and Windsor (70).
Guelph's Sienna MacDonald took home athlete of the meet honours after a gold, silver and bronze finish. She broke her own U SPORTS record in the long jump for first, hit the world indoor standard in the 60m hurdles in a second-place finish and won bronze in the 60m dash, while also running lead leg for the fourth-place 4x200 relay team.
Guelph's Jason Kerr was named coach of the year on the women's side after another impressive run to gold with incredible depth. Guelph led the meet in points from Day 1 en route to victory.

CHAMPIONNATS D'ATHLÉTISME U SPORTS : Bortolato mène les Martlets au pointage aux nationaux
La perchiste termine cinquième; le relais 4x400 établit un record d'école
WINNIPEG — Julie Bortolato a obtenu une cinquième place au saut à la perche et le relais féminin de McGill a établi un record d'école aux Championnats canadiens universitaires d'athlétisme en salle U SPORTS 2026, une compétition de trois jours qui s'est conclue samedi au James Daly Fieldhouse.
Bortolato, étudiante de 20 ans en deuxième année en sciences cognitives et originaire de Mountain View, en Californie, a franchi 3,70 m, récoltant quatre des six points de McGill au classement par équipes. Sa performance se situait à six centimètres du record universitaire qu'elle avait établi il y a deux semaines aux championnats du RSEQ. À égalité avec Alina Bilenko de York à cette hauteur, elle a toutefois obtenu le meilleur rang au bris d'égalité, terminant à seulement 10 centimètres de la quatrième place.
Le relais 4x400 m de McGill a ajouté les deux autres points grâce à une septième place nationale en 3 min 50,41 s, effaçant du même coup le record d'école de 3:52,54 établi lors du championnat de conférence. Le quatuor formé d'Ashleigh Brown (Brampton, Ontario), Jade Jones (Toronto), Emma Veilleux (Montréal) et Natalya Babkine (Montréal-Ouest, Québec) a raté de peu la sixième position, terminant à seulement 0,04 seconde de Laval (3:50,45) dans une course chaudement disputée.

Les Martlets se trouvaient toutefois à portée de main d'un meilleur classement, à un point seulement de l'Université de Montréal et à trois points de Sherbrooke.
Guelph a décroché un septième titre national en huit ans avec 105 points, devant la Saskatchewan (79) et Windsor (70).

Elle a amélioré son propre record U SPORTS au saut en longueur pour l'or, atteint le standard mondial en salle au 60 m haies lors d'une deuxième place et décroché le bronze au 60 m, tout en participant au relais 4x200 m qui a terminé quatrième.
Jason Kerr, de Guelph, a été nommé entraîneur de l'année du côté féminin après une autre conquête nationale marquée par la profondeur de son équipe. Les Gryphons ont dominé le classement dès la première journée et n'ont jamais cédé la tête jusqu'à la victoire.
