MONTREAL – McGill University opened its men's rugby preseason on a winning note Saturday, posting a 28-14 victory over Dartmouth College at Percival Molson Stadium.

After a slow start, the Redbirds built a 21-0 lead in the first half with tries from three different players, then sealed the result with a late score in the 80th minute.

"Dartmouth was very strong out of the gate which is a real credit to them," said Ian Baillie, in his 13th year (12th season) as McGill head coach. "That's a long bus ride up across the border and they had all the possession early and put us under a bunch of pressure. Our defence had a bit of a bend-but-no-break (effort) and we showed some good high IQ, heads-up rugby. Putting the ball behind them, getting it into space. Eventually we were presented with a couple of opportunities, were able to get on the scoreboard first and kept looking forward as the game went on."

Second-year wing Harry Corkum of London, U.K., a mechanical engineering major, touched down in the 12th minute to put McGill on the board. He was followed by James Mason, a sophomore centre from Paris, France, who crossed in the 28th minute. Veteran No. 8 Ian McDowell, a 25-year-old PhD candidate in neuroscience from Montreal, added a try six minutes later. All three early markers were converted by fullback Martin Laval of Montreal, a graduate student in management, giving McGill a 21-0 advantage at the half.

Dartmouth replied with back-to-back tries from Gjergji Bacuku, converted by Ethan Knight, to narrow the gap to 21-14 midway through the second half. But McGill answered in the dying moments when Nicolas Tissier, a 20-year-old outside back from Oakville, Ont., scored in the 80th minute. Education sophomore Shun Hatano added the conversion to close out the scoring.

"We got more into our structure as the game went on and started exerting some pretty decent physical pressure on them," Baillie added. "We were really strong down by the goal-line, keeping them out of our zone. They pushed us around a little bit in the scrum but our lineup worked very well, providing us with a good platform and some opportunities that we  took advantage of. I was really pleased with the (result) and am looking forward to getting back to work this week for our regular season opener against Carleton."

McGill begins play in the RSEQ conference when the Ravens visit Molson Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 4 in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The game is being billed as "Rugby for Community Safety Night".

McGill bat Dartmouth lors du match d'ouverture de la pré-saison de rugby

MONTRÉAL – L'Université McGill a débuté sa pré-saison de rugby masculin sur une note victorieuse samedi, remportant une victoire 28-14 contre le Dartmouth College au stade Percival Molson.

Après un début de match difficile, les Redbirds ont pris une avance de 21-0 en première mi-temps grâce à des essais marqués par trois joueurs différents, puis ont scellé le résultat avec un essai tardif à la 80e minute.

« Dartmouth a très bien démarré le match, ce qui est tout à leur honneur », a déclaré Ian Baillie, qui en est à sa 13e année (12e saison) en tant qu'entraîneur-chef de McGill. « Ils ont fait un long trajet en bus pour traverser la frontière et ils ont dominé le début du match, nous mettant beaucoup de pression. Notre défense a fait preuve d'une certaine souplesse, mais sans céder, et nous avons fait preuve d'un bon QI et d'un rugby intelligent. Nous avons placé le ballon derrière eux, dans l'espace. Finalement, nous avons eu quelques occasions, nous avons pu ouvrir le score et nous avons continué à aller de l'avant tout au long du match. »

L'ailier de deuxième année Harry Corkum, originaire de Londres, au Royaume-Uni, étudiant en génie mécanique, a marqué un essai à la 12e minute, permettant à McGill d'ouvrir le score. Il a été suivi par James Mason, centre de deuxième année originaire de Paris, en France, qui a marqué à la 28e minute. Le vétéran numéro 8 Ian McDowell, un doctorant en neurosciences de 25 ans originaire de Montréal, a ajouté un essai six minutes plus tard. Les trois premiers essais ont été transformés par l'arrière Martin Laval, originaire de Montréal et étudiant diplômé en gestion, donnant à McGill une avance de 21-0 à la mi-temps.

Dartmouth a répliqué avec deux essais consécutifs de Gjergji Bacuku, transformés par Ethan Knight, pour réduire l'écart à 21-14 au milieu de la deuxième mi-temps. Mais McGill a répondu dans les derniers instants lorsque Nicolas Tissier, un arrière de 20 ans originaire d'Oakville, en Ontario, a marqué à la 80e minute. Shun Hatano, étudiant en deuxième année en éducation, a ajouté la transformation pour clore le score.

« Nous avons mieux structuré notre jeu au fur et à mesure que le match avançait et avons commencé à exercer une pression physique assez importante sur eux, a ajouté Baillie. Nous avons été très solides près de la ligne de but, les empêchant d'entrer dans notre zone. Ils nous ont un peu bousculés dans la mêlée, mais notre formation a très bien fonctionné, nous offrant une bonne plateforme et quelques occasions dont nous avons profité. Je suis très satisfait du résultat et j'ai hâte de me remettre au travail cette semaine pour notre premier match de saison régulière contre Carleton. »

McGill débutera la saison dans la conférence RSEQ lorsque les Ravens se rendront au stade Molson le jeudi 4 septembre pour un coup d'envoi à 19h30. Le match est présenté comme la « Soirée du rugby pour la sécurité communautaire ».
