MONTREAL –
Brandon Frattaroli of Pierrefonds, Que., was a double award recipient, including most valuable player honours as the McGill University men's hockey team officially wrapped up its 149th year of operations with the 45th annual Friends of McGill Hockey awards gala, Saturday.
The event was held on campus at Tomlinson Hall, inside the Sir Arthur Currie Gymnasium, which houses the McGill Sports Hall of Fame.
Frattaroli was presented with the Dr. Bobby Bell Memorial Bowl, which has been awarded to the Team MVP since 1950. The 24-year-old industrial relations senior also took home the team's Molson Cup Award, for the second time in three seasons, as the player with the most three-star selections (9) over the entire season. He led the league in goals and earned OUA East first-team all-star status.
Other major award winners included forward
Stephane Huard of Blainville, Que., who merited the Albert Fyon Trophy as most improved player; and defenceman
Igor Mburanumwe of Victoriaville, Que., who won the Friends of McGill Hockey Trophy as rookie of the year.
(MAJOR AWARD PROFILES POSTED BELOW)
The soiree featured a heartfelt tribute to eight graduating seniors, a group that included goaltenders
Alexis Shank (BA '25) and
Oscar Carsley (BA '24), defencemen
Maxime Blanchard (BCom '25) and
Mitchell Prowse (BSc '25), along with forwards
Zach Gallant (BCom '25),
Caiden Daley (BA '25),
Alex Plamondon (BA '25),
Drew Bennett (BA '25) and the aforementioned Frattaroli (BA '25).
Each senior received their game jersey, a framed photo portrait, a monogrammed team mug and a traditional McGill necktie.
The 2024-25 season, which began with an overseas training camp in the Czech Republic, featured a slow start and strong finish for the Redbirds, who were forced to relocate to Place Bell in Laval, Que., due to major renovations at McConnell Arena. Fourth-year bench boss
David Urquhart, guided the squad to its 20th consecutive playoff berth. The team posted a 25-16 record overall. In regular season play, the Redbirds had an 18-9-1 record and finished fourth, in a highly-competitive OUA East division that featured eventual national champion Ottawa and silver medalist Concordia. A benchmark barometer for the season was McGill winning five of six confrontations against fifth-place UQTR, including a two-game sweep in the OUA East quarter-finals. The Redbirds stunned division-leading Concordia 6-1 in the opening game of the semifinals but then dropped the next two by scores of 5-1 and 5-4.
McGill iced a lineup that featured six freshmen, five sophomores, seven juniors and nine seniors. Coach Urquhart and two of his players (
Mathieu Gagnon and
William Rouleau) were selected to represent Canada, which won gold at the FISU World University Winter Games in Italy.
Among the many FMH members in attendance at the awards gala were the following former McGill players, covering every decade dating back to the 1970s: Martin Raymond, Ty Fournier, Mathieu Poitras, Charles Gauthier, John Harris, Simon Marcotte-Légaré, Dan Gubiani, Dr. Jim Sproule, Mike Farmer, Larry Ruch, Mike Nelson, David Boucher, Jan Kaminsky, Alex Sills, Leonard Verrilli,
Neal Prokop, Jocelyn Perreault,
Patrick Delisle-Houde and
David Urquhart.
