added a silver as the McGill University men's swim team finished fourth of 25 teams at the U SPORTS national championships, Saturday.
Both qualified for All-Canadian second-team honours, which automatically goes to all silver medal recipients.
Eight U SPORTS championship records fell at the meet, including six on the men's side as UBC captured the men's title, accumulating 1,305.5 points over the three-day competition, held at Varsity Pool on the University of Toronto campus. Rounding out the top five was defending champ Toronto (1,078), along with Calgary (860), McGill (754.5) and Alberta (412), a school that announced in late October that it is dropping its swim program after this season due to ongoing financial challenges.
The Redbirds produced 13 swims in the A Finals (i.e. top 8), five of them were fourth-place finishes.
Courville-Fortin, a 20-year-old biochemistry freshman from Repentigny, Que., who was voted RSEQ rookie of the year, erased four school standards and four conference marks.
He established new McGill and RSEQ records in the morning prelims of the 200-metre backstroke (1:54.47), surpassing the benchmark held since 2019 by McGill grad
(1:57.04), who won a relay gold for France last summer at the Paris Olympics. Courville-Fortin's time was slower in the evening final of the 200 back, where he won bronze in 1:55.49.
The 6-foot-1 sprinter also broke McGill and RSEQ records in the silver-medal winning 200 individual medley (1:57.57), surpassing his own mark of 1:59.33.
Finally, he was part of school and RSEQ records in 4x100 medley relay (3:35.00) that finished fourth in the last race of the meet, erasing the previous best of 3:35.09 set in 2022. His leadoff leg in that race was in the 100 backstroke, where he posted a sizzling time of 52.88, which erased the McGill and RSEQ mark (52.18) set by
in 2019. And he just missed another podium with a fourth-place finish in the 50m backstroke.
, a civil engineering senior from Burlington, Vt., receiving the U SPORTS Student-athlete Community Service Award.
The aforementioned Baradat, a 22-year-old economics sophomore from France, won silver in the 400 freestyle, touching the wall in 3:50.08. The two-time RSEQ swimmer of the year was edged out by UBC's
, who won gold in 3:49.79.
