TORONTO, ONT –
Loïc Courville-Fortin and
Mats Baradat each won a silver medal and the former registered a pair of records for the McGill University men's swim program to highlight the team's results on Day 2 at the U SPORTS championships, Friday.
Six total U SPORTS meet records tumbled while both the UBC Thunderbirds women's and men's teams continued to hold their leads in the overall standings. McGill sits fourth of 25 schools on the men's side and third in the women's division.
The evening session was preceded by the presentation to the
U SPORTS Student-athlete Community Service Awards to McGill's
Erik Linseisen and
Marcella Whelan of the Memorial Sea-Hawks.
Courville-Fortin, a 20-year-old biochemistry freshman from Repentigny, Que., captured silver in the 200-metre individual medley, posting a time of one minute, 57.57 seconds. That erased his own school record of 1:59.33, which also stood as the RSEQ conference benchmark. The 6-foot-1 rookie was beaten in the race for gold by UBC's
Findlay Know, who set a U SPORTS championship meet record in 1:54.15. Laurier's
Kent Goni-Avilla took the bronze in 1:58.07.
Baradat, a 21-year-old economics sophomore and two-time swimmer of the year in the RSEQ conference, finished second in the men's 400 freestyle, touching the wall in 3:50.08. He was edged out by UBC's
Olivier Risk, who won gold in 3:49.79. The bronze went to Toronto's
Quinn Mattias (3:51.12).
The UBC duo of Olympians
Blake Tierney and
Finlay Knox gold secured both medals and U SPORTS records on Day 2. Touching the wall in 51:00, Tierney claimed the 100 backstroke, setting a new fastest time at Nationals. Meanwhile, Knox claimed his third U SPORTS record time of the meet, converting a 1:54.15 in the 200 individual medley into a national mark and U SPORTS gold. The pair were then joined by
Jake Gaunt and
Olivier Risk in the 4x200 freestyle relay, where they set another record time of 7:04.23.
Also achieving a U SPORTS meet record was York's
Eric Ginzburg, who touched the wall in 23.05 during the 50 butterfly, tying the previous national mark. Ginzburg captured a second U SPORTS gold medal on Day 2, winning the highly-competitive 50 free in a time of 21.80. The York sprinter now has three national gold medals after two days of competition, also securing gold in the 100 butterfly on Day 1.
The full list of event medalists from the first two days of competition is included below.
Swimmers will conclude the national championships inside the U of T Athletic Centre's Varsity Pool on Saturday morning beginning with prelims at 9:30 a.m., followed by finals at 5:30 p.m.
