MIDDLEBURY, VT –
Devin Chapple of Toronto struck gold and broke a fieldhouse record to pace the McGill Redbirds at the Middlebury College Field & Track Meet on Saturday.
There was no team scoring but the Redbirds won a pair of gold medals, three silvers and four bronze medals.
Also winning gold for McGill was
Sean Adams of State College, Penn.
Chapple, a 21-year-old management senior, produced a gold medal performance in the men's one-mile run, a distance commonly run in the NCAA but not seen at a U SPORTS meet. The 5-foot-8 middle distance specialist was clocked in four minutes, 10.89 seconds, erasing the Virtue Field House record of 4:12.74 established in 2018 by Springfield's
Jack Pinho.
Adams, a 21-year-old geography junior, won the 600m in 1:22.22, short of the school record (1:18.95).
Other McGillians to finish on the podium included
William Sanders (silver, 400m, 50.10 seconds),
Noah El Rimawi-Fine (silver, 3000m, 8:55.68),
Luca Messenger-Jones (silver, mile run, 4:15.23),
Justin Mazzella (bronze, 60m, 7.05 seconds),
Ernest Bragg (bronze, 60m hurdles, 8.79 seconds),
Olivier Gregoire (bronze, pole vault, 3.85m) and
Kilty McGonigal (bronze, long jump, 6.19m).
Next on tap is a busy weekend for McGill, which will send a split squad to simultaneous competitions in different cities: the Boston University Valentine Invitational and the Carleton Last Chance Qualifying Meet in Ottawa, Feb. 14-15.
