MONTREAL – Hockey's Mia Giles of Hammonds Plains, N.S., along with rowers Patrice Légaré of Montreal and Jacob Lofaro from Grimsby, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Nov. 2, 2025.
Giles is a 21-year-old science junior majoring in anatomy and cellular biology. She came up big with the game on the line in McGill 3-2 overtime shootout victory against the visiting Montreal Carabins in a women's hockey thriller at McConnell Arena on Halloween last Friday. The 5-foot-7 rearguard scored the insurance goal in a 2-0 shootout to put the game out of reach and assure victory for the Martlets. Giles enrolled at McGill in 2022 out of Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ont.
Légaré is a 22-year-old mechanical engineering senior and Lofaro, 22, is a civil engineering senior. The dynamic duo teamed up last weekend to win gold in men's double sculls at the Canadian University Rowing Association national championships. The event was hosted by McGill and held at the Olympic Basin just south of Montreal, where the Redbirds finished sixth of 28 teams.
The McGill double completed the 2,000-metre race in seven minutes, 1.58 seconds to finish more than two seconds ahead of second-place Waterloo (7:03.90) and capture the program's first national gold on the men's side since 2009. The dynamic duo also competed in the heavyweight eight, which qualified for the "A" finals where they finished sixth in 6:27.07.
Légaré is a 6-foot-1, 185-pounder who enrolled at McGill in 2002 out of John Abbott College. Lofaro is a fifth-year senior who measures 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds. He is a product of Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School in Grimsby, Ont.
