MONTREAL — McGill exploded for five second-half tries to defeat Concordia 50-25 on Saturday in the sixth annual Hardy Cup contest, which marked the final men's rugby game of the regular season.

The result clinched second place for McGill (5-1-0) in the RSEQ standings and a home semifinal berth. It had dire consequences for Concordia (1-4-1), which finished sixth in the seven-team conference and was eliminated from playoff contention.

It was McGill's third consecutive Hardy Cup conquest after dropping the first three confrontations to Concordia in the annual competition that was inaugurated in 2019. the trophy is named after Dave Hardy, who coached at both institutions. He served as bench boss at McGill from 1982 to 1989 and later served as an assistant coach at Concordia.

The Redbirds scored eight tries in total, earning a bonus point for the fourth time in six outings. The victory means McGill will host the third-place Montreal Carabins (3-2-1) in a Quebec league semifinal on Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium. In their previous meeting this season, McGill downed the Carabins 24-5 on Oct. 11.

Harry Corkum and Elliot Descarreaux each tallied a pair of tries for McGill, while Brad Hunger, Nicolas Vicente-Louis, Adam Virani and Toby Ferneyhough also touched down. Martin Laval added five conversion for a total of 10 points.

Phil Hacala led the Stingers with two penalty goals and a conversion for 10 points, while Jaxon Alexander scored two tries and Khaled Abu-Yahia added another.

The other RSEQ semifinal will feature Bishop's (3-3-0) visiting first-place ETS (6-0-0).

MONTRÉAL — McGill a explosé avec cinq essais en deuxième mi-temps pour battre Concordia 50-25 samedi lors de la sixième édition annuelle de la Coupe Hardy, qui marquait le dernier match de rugby masculin de la saison régulière.

Ce résultat a permis à McGill (5-1-0) de décrocher la deuxième place du classement du RSEQ et de se qualifier pour les demi-finales à domicile. Il a eu des conséquences désastreuses pour Concordia (1-4-1), qui a terminé sixième de la conférence à sept équipes et a été éliminée de la course aux séries éliminatoires.

Il s'agit de la troisième victoire consécutive de McGill dans la Coupe Hardy après avoir perdu les trois premières confrontations contre Concordia dans cette compétition annuelle inaugurée en 2019. Le trophée porte le nom de Dave Hardy, qui a été entraîneur dans les deux institutions. Il a été entraîneur principal à McGill de 1982 à 1989, puis entraîneur adjoint à Concordia.

Les Redbirds ont marqué huit essais au total, obtenant un point bonus pour la quatrième fois en six matchs. Grâce à cette victoire, McGill accueillera les Carabins de Montréal (3-2-1), troisièmes au classement, en demi-finale du RSEQ le 24 octobre à 20 h au stade Percival Molson.
