MONTREAL — The McGill Redbirds clinched an RSEQ men's rugby playoff berth with a convincing 24-5 victory over the visiting Montreal Carabins on Saturday at Percival Molson Stadium.

The result vaulted McGill (4-1-0) past Montreal (3-2-1) into second place in the seven-team conference. The Redbirds, who have one game remaining, could still finish as low as fourth. The Carabins, who have concluded their regular season, are assured of finishing either third or fourth.

Henry "Harry" Corkum, led the way for McGill with a pair of tries. Fly half Martin Laval added nine points, converting two tries and adding a penalty goal. The other try was scored by  Brad Hunger.

McGill built a 17-0 halftime lead on a Laval penalty and tries from Hunger and Harry Corkum. Henry Corkum added a second-half marker to extend the margin before Baptiste Fanton replied late for Montreal.

The match featured one card, a yellow shown to McGill's Ian McDowell in the opening minutes.

The Redbirds will wrap up their regular season on the road against fifth-place Concordia (1-3-1).

Les Redbirds de Rugby surpassent les Carabins et décrochent leur place en séries éliminatoires

McGill domine Montréal dans une victoire décisive

MONTRÉAL — Les Redbirds de McGill ont décroché leur place en séries éliminatoires du RSEQ grâce à une victoire convaincante de 24-5 contre les Carabins de Montréal samedi au stade Percival Molson.

Ce résultat a permis à McGill (4-1-0) de dépasser Montréal (3-2-1) et de se hisser à la deuxième place du classement de la conférence qui compte sept équipes. Les Redbirds, qui ont encore un match à disputer, pourraient toutefois terminer à la quatrième place. Les Carabins, qui ont terminé leur saison régulière, sont assurés de terminer soit troisième, soit quatrième.

Henry « Harry » Corkum, a mené McGill avec deux essais. Le demi d'ouverture Martin Laval a ajouté neuf points, convertissant deux essais et ajoutant un but de pénalité. L'autre essai a été marqué par Brad Hunger.

McGill a pris une avance de 17-0 à la mi-temps grâce à une pénalité de Laval et des essais de Hunger et Harry Corkum. Henry Corkum a ajouté un deuxième essai en deuxième mi-temps pour creuser l'écart avant que Baptiste Fanton ne réplique en fin de match pour Montréal.

Le match a donné lieu à un carton, un carton jaune montré à Ian McDowell de McGill dans les premières minutes.

Les Redbirds termineront leur saison régulière à l'extérieur contre Concordia (1-3-1), cinquième au classement.
