McGill's Rouleau assists as Canadian hockey squad trumps USA in FISU Games semifinal

TORINO, ITALY – Ten different players scored for Canada en route to a decisive 10-2 victory over the United States in a men's hockey semifinal at the FISU World University Winter Games, Tuesday.

The U SPORTS all-stars had a 64-14 edge in shots over the Americans and improved to 5-0-1 overall at the tourney, while the USA suffered its first setback and dropped to 5-1-0 overall. The Americans held 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but Canada rallied with nine unanswered goals to punch its ticket to Wednesday's gold medal game (2 p.m. Eastern) against Slovakia, which had advanced earlier after a 3-1 decision over Ukraine. The USA will meet Ukraine for bronze.

The Canadian squad includes a lineup with McGill Redbirds bench boss David Urquhart who is serving as an assistant coach to Mark Howell (Calgary), along with McGill players Mathieu Gagnon and William Rouleau, both management juniors. Gagnon, a native of Gatineau, Que., has tallied one goal and an assist in six tournament games. Rouleau, who hails from St. Basile de Portneuf, Que., collected his third assist of the tourney. Other McGillians representing Canada at the Games include Dr. Mickey Moroz and Julie Gardiner, both members of the McGill Sports Medicine Clinic, who  are among the mission staff's medical team

Canada, the defending gold medalists in hockey from the 2023 Games in Lake Placid, will be looking to avenge a 4-2 loss to Slovakia in the 2001 FISU gold medal game in Poland.

The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after the opening period but Canada jumped into an insurmountable 6-2 advantage after two and then added five more in the final stanza.

Scoring for Canada was Jake Lee (UBC), Samuel Huo (UBC), Charles Callaghan (StFX), Sasha Mutala (UBC), Connor Bowie (TMU), Conor Frenette (UQTR), Nolan Hutcheson (Queen's), Colson Gengenbach (Calgary), Kale McCallum (UNB), and Kurtis Henry (UPEI).

Replying for the Americans was Justin Hughes (U. of Arizona), and Lazarus Kaebel (Liberty U.)

Goaltender Kai Edmonds (TMU) made 12 saves for the victory, while Konrad Kausch (Liberty U.) started and took the loss for the USA. He made 43 saves on 49 shots before being replaced after two periods by Douglas Wakelyn (U. of Nevada-Las Vegas), who conceded four goals on 15 shots.
