MONTREAL – Scott Walford, a Montreal Canadiens draft pick and former captain of the McGill University men's hockey team, has signed a contract with Villacher SV in Austria.

Villacher SV posted a 21-23-4 record this season in the 13-team International Central European Hockey League (ICEHL), Austria's top professional league.

The 27-year-old native of Coquitlam, B.C., played the 2025-26 campaign with Kalmar HC, a second-division team in Sweden, where he recorded 14 points, including four goals, and had 22 penalty minutes in 46 games. The six-foot-two, 201-pound defenceman signed with the Swedish club in 2024 after two seasons with Syracuse in the American Hockey League.

"Scott was an absolute dream solution for us," VSV head coach Pierre Allard said on the team's website. "He is a multi-dimensional player. His greatest strengths are clearly in the defence, but he can contribute offensively. That's exactly the type of player we were looking for. He has size and physicality and doesn't shy away from contact. He fits perfectly into our system and will give us a lot of depth on defence."

Villach, located about 300 kilometres southwest of Vienna, has a population of approximately 66,000.

Walford graduated from McGill in 2023 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He earned OUA East first-team all-star honours in his senior year and was a three-time recipient of the Bobby Bell Trophy as team MVP. He appeared in 90 career games with the Redbirds from 2021 to 2024, recording 11 goals, 60 assists and 52 penalty minutes.

After helping McGill capture bronze at the U SPORTS national championship, Walford signed with the Syracuse Crunch, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He made his AHL debut on March 22, 2024, becoming the 16th McGill hockey product to play in the league, and later appeared in a pre-season game with Tampa Bay on Sept. 26, 2024.

Selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the third round (68th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft, Walford played 290 career WHL games with the Saskatoon Blades and Victoria Royals from 2014 to 2020.

Le Villacher SV a présenté une fiche de 21-23-4 cette saison dans la Ligue internationale d'Europe centrale (ICEHL), le principal circuit professionnel du pays, qui compte 13 équipes.

Originaire de Coquitlam, en Colombie-Britannique, le défenseur de 27 ans a évolué avec le Kalmar HC, en deuxième division suédoise, lors de la saison 2025-2026. Il y a récolté 14 points, dont quatre buts, et écopé de 22 minutes de pénalité en 46 matchs. Le joueur de six pieds deux pouces et 201 livres s'était joint à la formation suédoise en 2024 après deux saisons à Syracuse, dans la Ligue américaine.

Après avoir aidé McGill à remporter la médaille de bronze au championnat national U SPORTS, Walford s'est entendu avec le Crunch de Syracuse, club-école du Lightning de Tampa Bay dans la Ligue américaine. Il a fait ses débuts dans la LAH le 22 mars 2024, devenant le 16e joueur issu du programme de hockey de McGill à évoluer dans ce circuit. Il a ensuite disputé un match préparatoire avec le Lightning le 26 septembre 2024.

Choisi par les Canadiens de Montréal en troisième ronde (68e au total) du repêchage de la LNH en 2017, Walford a disputé 290 matchs dans la WHL avec les Blades de Saskatoon et les Royals de Victoria entre 2014 et 2020.
