Nine-year-old relay record tumbles for McGill track team at uOttawa Winter Classic

OTTAWA – The McGill University men's track and field team produced three gold medal performances and broke a nine-year-old school record at the uOttawa Winter Classic in the nation's capital on Saturday.

The two-day, open indoor meet had no team scoring and was held at the Louis Riel Dome, which features an oversized 400-metre flat track. The Redbirds registered 14 podium finishes, including six silvers and five bronzes.

The record-breaking performance occurred in the men's 4x800-metre relay, which finished second, crossing the line in seven minutes, 37.39 seconds, the 11th fastest tim in the country this season. The race was won by a foursome from UNB in 7:36.67 and the RSEQ conference record is 7:34.50.

Running leadoff for the McGillian quartet was Sean Adams, a geography junior from State College, Penn. Ben Gates, a mechanical engineering freshman from Regina, Sask., ran the second leg, followed by Samuel Hepworth, a psychology sophomore from Montreal, and Devin Chapple, a management senior from Toronto.

McGill's time eclipsed the team mark of 7:38.96 set on Feb. 26, 2016 by Ethan Wilkinson, Cody Rountree, Benjamin Forestell and Vincent Parenteau-Pichette, in the RSEQ championship meet held at the Tomlinson Fieldhouse.

The aforementioned Gates, an 18-year-old middle distance runner, also struck gold in the 600m, crossing the finish line in 1:20.07.

Another golden moment for the Redbirds was Ernest Bragg, a management sophomore from Luxembourg, who took the 60m hurdles in 8.80 seconds, within reach of the school record (8.19).

The Redbirds also claimed gold in the 4x200m relay, which was clocked in 1:28.30, the fifth-fastest in the nation this season and not far off the school mark of 1:27.92. The foursome featured Luca Nicoletti, an engineering junior from Ottawa, Krescyn Moonsamy, a physiology sophomore from Nanaimo, B.C., Ricardo Percopo, an engineering senior from Boisbriand, Que., and Jay Yetman, an Arts sophomore from Ottawa.

Next on tap is the McGill Team Challenge, Jan. 24-25, which is billed as the largest indoor meet in Canada.
