OTTAWA – The McGill University women's track and field team collected three gold medal performances at the uOttawa Winter Classic in the nation's capital on Saturday.
No records fell but the Martlets produced nine podium finishes, including two silvers and four bronzes. The two-day, open indoor meet had no team scoring and was held at the Louis Riel Dome, which features an oversized 400-metre flat track.
Vanessa Lu Langley, a fifth-year chemical engineering senior from Ottawa, won the 60-metre hurdles in 8.84 seconds, which was encroaching the school record (8.55).
Julie Bortolato, a science freshman from Mountainview, Calif., took the pole vault with a height 3.30 metres, well short of the team record is 3.65m.
And finally, the women's 4x400m relay also finished first, posting a time of 4:00.87, which was also shy of the school record (3:52.94).
The foursome was composed of lead-off runner
Audrey Gilmour, an Arts & Science senior from Ottawa. She was followed by
Ashleigh Brown, a psychology senior from Brampton, Ont.,
Sophie Oberlander, an Arts sophomore from Toronto, and
Marie Billaud, a first-year doctorate student in chemical engineering, who hails from Angers, located about 300 kilometres southwest of Paris, in France.
Next on tap is the McGill Team Challenge, Jan. 24-25, which is billed as the largest indoor meet in Canada.
