SHERBROOKE, QUE –
Rebecca Warcholak,
Julie Bortolato and
Lola Ross-McLennan each posted gold medal performances as the McGill University women's track and field team finished in a first-place tie with Laval at the Sherbrooke Invitational, Saturday. The two-day meet featured nine universities.
No records fell but the Martlets produced eight podium finishes, including a pair of silvers and three bronzes in McGill's second of seven competitions scheduled for the indoor season, which began in early December.
The McGill women and Laval each scored 116 points. Sherbrooke, the host team, was third with 99, followed by Montreal (61), École de technologie supérieure (32), UQAC (17), College Militaire Royale (15), UQTR (13) and Concordia (11).
Warcholak, a science sophomore from Toronto, won the triple jump with a distance of 11.36 metres, which was shy of the U SPORTS qualifying standard (12.05m).
Bortolato, a science freshman from Mountainview, Calif., claimed the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.30m, which was short of the school record (3.65m) and the qualifying standard (3.89m).
Ross-McLennan, an international development studies senior from Vancouver, B.C., took the 60m sprint in 7.92 seconds, slightly slower than the 7.80 she posted in the semifinal. Finishing behind her was McGill's
Donna Ntambue, who tied for second place with Laval's
Sarah Dulude-Bellavance, after posting a time of 7.68 seconds in the semifinal. Neither of the latter two ran in the final, so their times from the semis were incorporated in the scoring. Ntambue, an Hispanic studies junior, was hoping to beat the U SPORTS qualifying standard (7.47) and the school record she set last year with a sizzling time of 7.32.
Next on tap is the uOttawa Winter Classic at the Louis-Riel Dome in the nation's capital, Jan. 18.
