MONTREAL –
Martin Laval tallied a game-high nine points as McGill cruised past the Montreal Carabins 24-6 in a heated men's university rugby match, Friday, at Terrain Vincent d'Indy.
The result left McGill atop the seven-team RSEQ conference standings with a 2-0 record, while the Carabins dropped to 0-1. The game ended in a melee, with three cards assessed, two of them red. Ejected was U de M's Cyprien Viasnoff and McGill's Henry Corkum.
Laval, a senior from France, was "Mr. Reliable", going 3-for-3 on his conversion attempts and adding a penalty kick. A master's student in retail management currently leads the league scoring race with 24 points in two games, eight points ahead

Audric Paris registered all the scoring for the Carabins with a pair of penalty kicks.
Both teams return to play on Sept. 21.The Carabins (0-1) will host the ETS Pirhanas (0-1) who finished atop the standings last year with a 6-0 record, then manhandled Concordia 34-3 in the semifinals but were stunned 18-17 by second-place Ottawa in the league championship game.
McGill (2-0) will host Carleton (0-1) in a Saturday soiree with a 7 p.m. kickoff at at Percival Molson Stadium.
