MONTREAL – Eric Uba has become the fourth McGill University men's hockey graduate from the past season to ink a pro contract. The 23-year-old native of Kitchener, Ont., signed with Mannheim of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, more commonly known as the DEL, in Germany.

Primarily a university town with a population of about 316,000, Mannheim is located between Frankfurt and Stuttgart. The team has a history of success, winning eight DEL championships since 1980, including its most recent title in 2019.

Uba, a six-foot, 200-pound right-winger, earned OUA second-team all-star honours last season. He finished second on the team in points and eighth among the league's scoring leaders with 34 points in regular season play, including a team-leading 16 goals, in 26 contests. He had 43 penalty minutes and scored six power-play markers in addition to three game-winners. Uba won the OUA playoff scoring race with an 8-3-11 record in six games.

During his three seasons with McGill, the 23-year-old management senior tallied 57 goals and 103 points with 109 PIMs in 105 games overall.

Uba is one of 105 McGill hockey players to move on to a pro career, including 17 who have skated in Germany, a list that features All-Canadian defenceman Ryan McKiernan (EHC München), former Montreal Canadiens forward Mathieu Darche (Duisburg), currently an assistant general manager with the Tampa Bay Lightning and former NHL assistant coach Martin Raymond (Schongau) in addition to three-time Stanley Cup champion coach Jamie Kompon (Selb).

Uba was recruited to McGill after his junior career in the Ontario Hockey League in 2020, where he skated for the Flint Firebirds and Guelph Storm.

The other McGill teammates who signed recently with teams in the pro ranks include Taylor Ford (Adirondack, ECHL), Scott Walford (Syracuse, AHL) and Adam Pilotte (Evansville, SPHL).
