U SPORTS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS: McGill engineering duo of Beaudet and McGonigal, break school records

WINNIPEG, MAN – Matthew Beaudet and Kilty McGonigal both broke school records and the former posted a silver medal finish to highlight performances by the McGill men's track and field team at the U SPORTS national championships, hosted by the University of Manitoba at the James Daly Fieldhouse, March 7-9.

Beaudet's second-place finish in the 3,000 metres was clocked in eight minutes, 1.44 seconds to surpass his own previous best of 8:03.26, set last month at a meet in Boston. He was edged out for gold by Laval's Jean-Simon Desgagnés (7:59.72), while bronze went to Guelph's Nicholas Bannon (8:06.66).

A 24-year-old electrical engineering senior from the NDG region of Montreal, Beaudet also finished fifth in the 1500m (3:46.96)

Gold medalists earn first-team All-Canadian status, while silver medalists merit second-team honours.

McGonigal's record-breaking effort occurred in the heptathlon, where he posted a fourth-place finish. The 22-year-old civil engineering junior from Deux Montagnes, Que., scored a combined 4,789 points over his seven events to erase the previous McGill mark of 4,739 set by Alex Stathis in 2020 at Quebec City.

Guelph finished first of 25 teams to capture a seventh consecutive men's banner with 89.5 points, to edge out Manitoba (82.3). Laval, the RSEQ champion, finished third (56.5). Other teams from the Quebec-based conference included Montreal (11th, 24 pts), McGill (14th, 17), Sherbrooke (18th, 9.5), UQAM (20th, 7) and Carleton (24th, 3).

Guelph's Max Davies was named male athlete of the year, based on his performance at the meet, where he collected three gold medals and broke two meet records. He set one mark in the 1500m with a time of 3:44.00 flat, breaking a 34-year-old standard set UBC's Allan Klassen in 1990.  His other record was in the 1000m, crossing the line in 2:21.00 flat. That erased a 12-year-old mark of 2:22.09 by Guelph's Tommy Lecours in 2012.
