RSEQ TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP: Redbirds triple golden as relay teams shine, qualify for Nationals

QUEBEC CITY – Kilty McGonigal of Deux Montagnes, Que., and two relay squads were golden as the McGill men's track and field team finished second of 11 schools at the RSEQ championships, a two-day meet that wrapped up Saturday at the Centre PEPS on the campus of Université Laval.

The Redbirds produced a dozen podium finishes, three of them golden, along with five silvers and four bronzes. No McGill records fell. All gold medalists earn first-team all-star honours and automatically qualify for the  U SPORTS national championships, while silver medalists merit second team all-star status.

Laval captured the men's title for the tenth consecutive season, finishing first with 236 points. McGill (126) was second, matching their finish from two seasons ago. The Montreal Carabins were third at 107, followed by Sherbrooke (81), UQAC (23), ETS (20), Concordia (19), UQTR (12), Carleton (11), UQAM (10) and College Militaire Royale (5).

McGonigal, a civil engineering junior, collected 4,644 points to win the heptathlon. The Redbirds took two of the three relays, winning gold in the 4x200 (1:31.04) and the 4x800 (7:51.75), while the 4x400 quartet was disqualified.

The 4x200 featured Ricardo Percopo , a mechanical engineering junior from Boisbriand, Que., in the leadoff leg. He was followed by Luca Nicoletti, a materials engineering sophomore from Ottawa, Krescyn Moonsamy, a physiology freshman from Nanaimo, B.C., and Jules Barrieu, a fifth-year physics senior from Manhattan Beach, Calif.

The 4x800 included leadoff sprinter Jules Gueguen, an economics sophomore from France. He was followed by Samuel Hepworth, a psychology freshman from Montreal and two management students from Toronto – junior Devin Chapple and senior Markus Geiger.

McGillians to claim silver include Geiger in the 600m, Montrealer Alexander Crooks (long jump), David Fitzgerald (triple jump) of Panama City, and Matthew Beaudet, from Montreal's NDG region, who finished second in both the 1500m and 3000m. Beaudet, whose medals were worth eight points each, ended up as McGill's leading scorer in the meet.

Fitzgerald also won bronze in the high jump. Other third-place finishes were posted by Luca Nicoletti (300m) of Ottawa, Ernest Bragg (60m hurdles) of Luxembourg and Mackenzie Stathis (triple jump) of Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Que.

Next on the agenda will be the U SPORTS national championship meet in Winnipeg, March 7-9
