McGill sprinter Geiger breaks school record to qualify for track Nationals

OTTAWA – Markus Geiger of the McGill University men's track and field team broke a school record and qualified for Nationals, to highlight the team's performance at the Ravens Last Chance Meet, Saturday. The two-day indoor competition was held at the Louis Riel Dome in the nation's capital, Feb. 16-17.

The Redbirds registered nine podium finishes, with three gold medals, three silvers and three bronzes.

Geiger, a 21-year-old management senior from Toronto, won bronze in the 600-metre race. His time met the U SPORTS qualifying standard and is currently ranked as the 11th fastest across the country. The middle-distance sprinter completed his race in one minute, 18.95 seconds, breaking the previous McGill mark of 1:19.15 set by Jack Crosby at the same venue in 2019. Crosby's record at that time, broke a McGill mark that had stood for 22 years.

David Fitzgerald, an Arts sophomore from Panama City,  won the triple jump with a meet record leap of 14.05 but it was short of the school record (14.90). He also registered a silver medal result in high jump, with a leap of 1.95m.

Kilty McGonigal, a civil engineering junior from Deux Montagnes, Que., won the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.46m that was still shy of the team standard (4.86m).

The other gold pedal performance was by Patrick Young, a two-sport athlete who also plays on the rugby team. The third-year kinesiology major from Derby Line, Vt., was first in the weight throw with a toss of 11.97m.

Other second-place finishes were posted by Mackenzie Stathis (triple jump) of Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Que., and Philippe Haddad (weight throw) of Toronto. Rounding out the bronze medal results was Jules Barrieu (pole vault) of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Alexander Crooks (long jump) of Montreal.

This was the last opportunity for athletes to qualify for the upcoming U SPORTS Nationals, prior to the RSEQ championship meet in Quebec City, Feb. 23-24. All gold medalists at the conference title meet will qualify for Nationals.
