Toronto Blue Jays announce appointment of McGill baseball grad Sam Greene

MONTREAL – The Toronto Blue Jays have announced the appointment of Sam Greene, a McGill University graduate, who joins the Major League Baseball team's staff as an assistant pitching coach.

The 27-year-old native of Philadelphia has been employed by the Jays as a senior pitching research specialist since 2021. He graduated from McGill in 2020 with a degree in strategic management, followed by a master's degree in analytics management.

During his playing days with the McGill Redbirds, the 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-handed pitcher played on three national championship teams over four seasons, including the 2018 campaign, when he was the winning pitcher in the gold medal game, a 6-2 victory over UNB. The previous year, he won the team's most improved player award.

"The McGill baseball experience is a special one," said Greene. "Being able to continue playing baseball at a high level while receiving a great education in data science/analytics enabled me to pursue a career like this. I learned a ton from my teammates and coaches about the game, and this has led to lifelong relationships."

Overall, Greene posted a 6-7 record with three saves in 31 appearances from 2016-17 to 2019-20. In 92.1 innings, he registered 83 strikeouts., with a 4.39 earned-run average and an opposition batting average of .223. Greene conceded 80 hits, 53 walks and 14 hit batsmen. He was recruited to McGill – by then coaches Jason Starr and Casey Auerbach – out of Central High School in Philadelphia.

Greene is one of two McGill baseball grads to be employed by an MLB team, joining Montrealer Shiraz Rehman (B.Com '99), a former assistant general manager with the Chicago Cubs who became the first McGillian to earn a World Series championship ring in 2016. Rehman also worked for the Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers.

Another McGill grad in professional baseball is Allan Bailey (BA '06), currently serving as general manager of the Vancouver Canadians,  a minor league affiliate of the Blue Jays.
