Nathanial Factor racked up eight strikeouts and
Jonas Press knocked in three runs as McGill walloped the
visiting Université de Montréal 11-1, Monday, to end regular season play in the Quebec University Baseball League.
The game was halted in the fifth inning as the 10-run Mercy Rule was applied for the third time in as many meetings between these clubs after the Carabins surprised McGill 8-5 in their first rendezvous on Sept. 8.
The Redbirds finished second in the four-team league with an 8-4 record and will meet third-place Concordia (6-6) in a QUBL best-of-three semifinal series slated to open with a doubleheader at 12 noon on Saturday (Oct. 5) on Gary Carter Field at Parc Trudeau. The Stingers finished at 6-6 after closing out their campaign with a 7-0 victory by forfeit over division-leading UQTR (9-3), which had insufficient players for the final game. The Patriotes also open a semifinal series with a doubleheader on Oct.5 when they take on UdeM.
McGill, which had a 9-3 advantage in hits, jumped into an early 7-0 lead, with three runs in the first, one in the second and three more in the third. The Carabins broke the shutout bid with one in the fourth inning but McGill roared back with two in the bottom of the fourth and added another pair in the truncated fifth.
Factor, a six-foot, 170-pound southpaw from Delta, B.C., threw 57 pitches over four innings and allowed only one run on a pair of hits. The 20-year-old computer engineering junior issued no walks to go along with eight strikeouts. Over his four regular season appearances, he posted a 2-0 record with a 2.80 earned-run average and a team-leading 18 strikeouts in 15 innings
Press, the starting first baseman from Toronto, posted his team-leading eighth multi-hit game. Batting from the No.3 spot, he went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, and scored three times. The political science junior smacked an RBI double to right in the first inning and hit an RBI single to end the game in the fifth.
Teammate
Aidan Grskovic was the only other multi-hit player. The fourth-year catcher from Katonah, N.Y. , was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple. Second baseman
Brandon Kim,a fifth-year senior from Vienna, Va., tied for the game-high with three RBIs. He batted 1-for-2 at the plate, with an RBI double and came around to score once..
McGill reliever
Agastya Kushari, a sophomore lefthander from Toronto, pitched one inning, gave up a hit but struck out the side.
Carabins starter
Josua Ouellet took the loss. He gave up nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits, walked three batters and hit two others.
