NEPEAN, ONT – The McGill men's baseball team mounted a spirited challenge early but were undone by a late offensive surge from the Ottawa Nepean Canadians (ONC), falling 10–4 in Sunday's semifinal of the Carleton Labour Day Classic at the Nepean Sportsplex.

McGill came out of the gates strong, securing a 3–1 lead through three innings. Centre-fielder Samuel Walsh provided the highlight with a solo home run in the second, while shortstop William Durnford delivered a multi-hit effort, tallying a run and an RBI. Alex Strapko found his way on base twice and scored, and first baseman Eli Brisman plated a key run.

However, despite six baserunners, the Redbirds stranded 11 overall and failed to capitalize, going hitless over the final six innings against ONC's bullpen.

ONC responded in force, tying the game with three runs in the third and then exploding for five more in the sixth. They capped their offensive showing with a two-run explosion in the eighth. Offensively, designated hitter Hayden Payne led the charge with a 3-for-3 outing and four RBIs; Nolan Hobbins added a pair of RBIs, and Owen Gaudreau scored twice and cashed in another runner.

On the mound, Nepean's Ethan Bathurst delivered a solid start, allowing four runs (only two earned) on five hits across five innings while striking out five. Reliever Nolan Kaluza was excellent in relief, tossing three no-hit frames with five strikeouts, before Alex Amos closed out the game.

For McGill, Tate Spence held the line initially, surrendering just three unearned runs on four hits through four innings with three strikeouts. But reliever Donovan Worrall was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (three earned), and the bullpen ceded control as ONC rallied.

The defeat drops McGill to 0–3 in preseason play. They'll seek to turn their luck around when they host Université de Montréal at Parc Claude-Robillard on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

McGill a pris un bon départ, menant 3-1 après trois manches. Le centre Samuel Walsh s'est illustré avec un coup de circuit en solo dans la deuxième manche, tandis que l'arrêt-court William Durnford a réussi plusieurs coups sûrs, marquant un point et un point produit. Pour McGill, Tate Spence a tenu bon au début, ne concédant que trois points non mérités sur quatre coups sûrs en quatre manches avec trois retraits au bâton. Mais le releveur Donovan Worrall a été crédité de la défaite après avoir concédé quatre points (dont trois mérités), et l'enclos des releveurs a cédé le contrôle alors que l'ONC remontait au score.

Cette défaite porte le bilan de McGill à 0-3 en pré-saison. L'équipe tentera de renverser la vapeur lorsqu'elle accueillera l'Université de Montréal au Parc Claude-Robillard le mercredi 10 septembre à 19 h 30.
