Press provides pop as Redbirds rally to sweep Stingers in semifinal series

COTE ST. LUC, QUE – First baseman Jonas Press stroked a two-run double and came around to score as McGill rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Concordia 7-5 at Gary Carter Field on Saturday. The result gave the Redbirds a playoff doubleheader sweep to capture a best-of-three Quebec University Baseball League semifinal series.

Hours earlier, in the Game 1 opener, the second-place Redbirds (8-4) overcame a five-run deficit in the first inning for an 8-7 victory over the Stingers, who finished third in the standings with a 6-6 record.

McGill advances to the QUBL championship series, a best-of-three affair with UQTR, which won the regular season pennant with a 9-3 record. The omnipotent Patriotes qualified by sweeping their semifinal series on Saturday, winning 10-0 and 13-2 over the fourth-place Montreal Carabins (1-11).

Concordia opened the Game 2 scoring in the top of the first inning but McGill rebounded with a pair in the first and two more in the second. The Stingers then exploded for four in the top of the sixth for a 5-4 lead but McGill responded immediately with an explosive three in the bottom of the inning to conclude the fireworks.

Press, a political science junior, who hits third in the batting order, batted 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, scored twice and had three runs batted in. The native of Toronto also reached base when hit by a pitch.

His partners in crime were a pair of management juniors, namely Jett Jarvis of Wyoming, Ont., and Alessandro Perreault, a Montrealer.

Jarvis, a centrefielder who was batting from the No.2 spot, was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Perreault, the clean-up hitter and left-fielder, also racked up three RBIs, with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, a double and a walk.

The game featured 15 hits, 16 walks and one hit batsman as both starters struggled with control, Henri Boudreau for the Redbirds and Milo Auslander for Concordia.

Agastya Kushari, one of four McGill pitchers deployed, was credited with the win in relief.

The QUBL finals are slated to open in Trois-Rivieres on Oct. 12 with a doubleheader at Stade Quillorama. If the rivals split and a rubber match is needed, it is slated for Sunday in Montreal. The same two teams also met in last year's final series, won 2-1 by the Patriotes.
