MONTREAL –
Luca Messenger-Jones, a distance runner with the McGill University Redbirds, has earned first-team all-star status, while teammates
Devin Chapple and
Samuel Hepworth have merited berths on the second squad as the RSEQ men's cross-country laureates have been announced.
The top seven finishers at the RSEQ championship meet, held Oct. 26 in Vaudreuil, Que., automatically earn a first-team spot, while the next seven runners receive second-team honours.
Messenger-Jones, a 20-year-old exchange student from the University of Edinburgh, finished seventh in the league's title meet, The U.K. native who hails from the mountainous Lake District region in northwest England, completed the eight-kilometre course in 25 minutes, 19 seconds.
Chapple, a 21-year-old finance senior from Toronto, finished eighth in a field of 110 runners, posting a time of 25:21.
Hepworth is a 20-year-old psychology sophomore from Montreal. He finished 11h overall, crossing the finish line in 25:31.
Among the conference's major award winners, Laval's
Philippe Morneau-Cartier was named athlete of the year in a vote conducted by the league's 11 head coaches. Sherbrooke's
Nolan Turgeon won rookie-of-the-year honours, while UQTR's
Vincent Abraham earned the leadership and citizenship award, Sherbrooke's
Marc-André Roy was named coach of the year.
