SHERBROOKE, QUE –Rookie
Abene Glasgow paced McGill to a second-place standing in the women's division at the Sherbrooke Invitational cross-country meet, in RSEQ university competition, Saturday..
Over the first three races of the current season, the Martlets won the first two – at both McGill and Carleton – and ended up third at the Laval meet.
Sherbrooke's
Laurence Gauthier was first of 67 runners, completing the eight-kilometre course in 29 minutes, 57 seconds. UQAM's
Elisa Tripotin was second (30:10) and
Marine Garnier (30:34) of the Montreal Carabins took the last podium spot.
Glasgow, who hails from Toronto, filled in admirably for the Martlets who were missing a few of their top runners due to mid-term exams and injuries. The 18-year-old Arts freshman finished fourth, crossing the finish line in 31:22.
Other McGillians in the scoring included
Chloe Desjardins (eighth, 31:40),
Sophie Rashid-Cocker (12th, 32:08),
Sofia Veilleux (17th, 32:25) and
Zoe Gardiner (18th, 32:29).
Sherbrooke finished atop the 10-team field with 54 points, followed closely by the Martlets, who registered 59 points after placing runners in fourth, eighth, 12th 17th and 18th. The Montreal Carabins were third (72), followed by UQTR (95), UQAM (169), Ottawa (213), UQAC (264), ETS (286), College Militaire Royale de St. Jean (301) and Carleton (308).
The next meet, the fifth of the season, will be the RSEQ conference championships, an 8k race scheduled for Oct. 26 at Parc Saint-Lazare in Vaudreuil, Que.
