QUEBEC CITY –
Luca Messenger-Jones, a distance runner from the McGill men's cross-country team, finished seventh of 107 runners overall at the Laval Invitational meet held Saturday on the Plains of Abraham.
The 20-year-old student on exchange from the University of Edinburgh, guided the Redbirds to place second in the men's division, which was composed of eight RSEQ schools at the meet. McGill was without the services of several runners, including the team's leading scorer
Devin Chapple, who were preoccupied with mid-term exams.
Laval finished first with 23 points, with runners placing first, third, fifth, sixth and eighth. McGill was a distant second with 86 points, followed by Sherbrooke (91), UQAM (99), ETS (132), UQTR (137), UQAC (163) and College Militaire Royale from St-Jean (242).
Laval's
Philippe Morneau-Cartier won the eight-kilometre race in 24 minutes, 33 seconds. Joining him atop the podium was the Sherbrooke's
Nolan Turgeon (24:55) and Laval's
Rudy Saal (25:13)
The four other McGillians in the scoring was
Sacha Dernoncourt (13th, 26:29),
Ben Morales (18th, 27:10),
Lucien Louvet (23rd; 27:44) and
Emile Mignault (25th; 27:47).
Next on tap is the Sherbrooke Invitational, the fourth of six races on the team's fall calendar, slated for Oct. 12.
