Jumps specialist Warcholak double golden as indoor track season opens with Martlet Invitational

MONTREAL – Rebecca Warcholak of Toronto posted a pair of gold medal finishes to pace the McGill women's track and field team at the Martlet Invitational, an open meet to initiate the indoor season, at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Saturday.
 
There was no team scoring in the competition, which featured a combined 340 male and female athletes, mostly from local track clubs.
 
The McGill Martlets produced 17 podiums, including six gold medals, five silvers and six bronzes.
 
Warcholak, a science sophomore, won both the long jump (5.18m) and the triple jump (11.38). 
 
The Martlets other gold medal performances were achieved by senior Audrey Gilmour of Ottawa in the 300m (41.91 seconds), Marie Billaud, a first-year doctorate student from France in the 600m (1:37.29), Julie Bortolato, a freshman from Mountainview, Calif., in the polevault (3.25m) and the 4x200m relay, which crossed the finish line in 1:48.12. Running the leadoff leg in that foursome was Emma Umess, followed by senior Asleigh Brown of Brampton, Ont., freshman Mercy Ajibola of Winnipeg and Rebecca El Mairy, a rookie from Montreal.
 
The only school record that was challenged by in the 60m, where sprinter Donna Ntambu, a senior from Montreal, finished third in 7.71 seconds. Her time of 7.65 in the preliminaries was within reach of her school record 7.32.
 
The second meet of the indoor season will be the Sherbrooke Invitational on Jan. 11.
