OTTAWA – Four different players scored tries as Ottawa surprised McGill 29-9 in men's university rugby at Terrain Matt Anthony in the nation's capital, Sunday.
It was McGill's first-ever setback to the Gee-Gees, after winning the first six confrontations since the series began in 2018.
McGill's points were all scored from the foot of
Martin Laval, who connected for three penalty kicks.
Replying for Ottawa, with one try apiece, was
Sean Biryukov,
Gordie Evans,
Evan Roy and
Lewis Shiels. Rounding out the scoring was
Glenn Roy, with nine points, on three conversions and a penalty kick.
The Gee-Gees remained undefeated at 2-0 and earned six points in the RSEQ standings, including a bonus point, which awarded to teams that score four (or more) tries and/or lose a close game (i.e. by seven or less). Ottawa plays at Concordia (1-2) on Sept. 30.
McGill (1-2) has now dropped two consecutive games, by a combined score of 49-12 to ETS and Ottawa, after winning the season opener 77-3 at Carleton. It marks the most regular season losses by the Redbirds since going 3-4 in 2017. McGill will host the winless Montreal Carabins (0-2) on Friday (Sept. 29) in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Percival Molson Stadium.
