MONTREAL – Southpaw
Caden Welch of Langley, B.C., struck out 11 batters and threw a complete game one-hitter as McGill pounded out 13 hits with a 16-0 romp over the Universit
é de Montr
éal baseball club at Gary Carter Field, Tuesday.
The Redbirds scored in every inning, including 10 runs in the fourth before the mercy rule was applied to halt the offensive juggernaut in the fifth. A single by
Julion Malek leading off in the final inning broke up the no-hitter bid.
Welch, a 21-year-old science junior majoring in kinesiology, threw 91 pitches over his five innings of work and walked just three to register the victory.
Seven different Redbirds collected hits, led by three apiece for
Jonas Press of Toronto,
Brad Marelich of Pasedena, Calif., and
Chris Bodine of Pound Ridge, N.Y. Shortstop
Tim Wong, the McGill leadoff hitter from St. Leonard, Que., went 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Maxime Corriveau took the loss for Montr
éal.
In 2.1 innings, he allowed four hits and six runs (none earned) while striking out three, walking three and hitting one batter.
It was McGill's seventh consecutive victory over the Carabins and the fifth straight since UdeM resumed play last year after a three-year hiatus, dating back to a 9-7 Montreal victory on Oct. 6, 2018.
The Redbirds improved to 7-1 overall, including a 2-0 mark in RSEQ play, which has designated baseball as a pilot project this season. McGill plays Concordia on Wednesday (Sept. 13) in a 7:30 p.m. start at Gary Carter Field. The last time they crossed paths, the Redbirds eked out a wild 12-11 victory on Sept. 5.
