MONTREAL — A four-run second inning proved too much to overcome as McGill was eliminated from the Canadian university invitational baseball championship with a 4–1 loss to Carleton on Saturday afternoon at Centre Sportif Claude Robillard.
The setback came just hours after McGill's dramatic 2–1 walk-off victory over Acadia in an early-morning elimination game at Gary Carter Field, ending a grueling day of back-to-back must-win contests. The Redbirds finished the tournament with a 2–2 record and closed out their independent season at 11–18 overall.
Carleton (3–1) did all its scoring in the second inning against McGill starter William Greer (0–1), who allowed six hits and four runs — only two earned — over 3.1 innings. The freshman from Point Edward, Ont., struck out one and walked one before Tate Spence came on in relief, tossing 2.2 innings of hitless ball with one walk and one strikeout.
Ravens left-hander Matthew Scott (1–0) earned the win, limiting McGill to one unearned run on five hits through six innings while striking out one, walking none and hitting two batters. Mike Millross pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
After falling behind 4–0, McGill cut into the deficit in the third when Alex Strapko was hit by a pitch and scored on Nathaniel Steffler's RBI single to centre. The Redbirds threatened again in the fifth and sixth but stranded runners in scoring position both times.
Gabriel Reque-Cruz, Robby Glusker, Steffler, Eli Brisman, and Sam Walsh each recorded hits for McGill, with Reque-Cruz notching the lone extra-base knock — a double in the fifth. The Redbirds finished with five hits and one error, while Carleton managed six hits and one error.
The loss marked the final collegiate appearance for four McGill seniors: pitchers Donovan Worrall (Neuroscience) and Marcus Dela Cruz (Computer Science & Economics), outfielder Nathaniel Factor (Computer Engineering) and first baseman Vincent Rizzolo (Kinesiology).

MONTRÉAL — Une deuxième manche marquée par quatre points s'est avérée trop difficile à surmonter pour McGill, qui a été éliminé du championnat universitaire canadien de baseball sur invitation après avoir perdu 4-1 contre Carleton samedi après-midi au Centre sportif Claude Robillard.
Ce revers est survenu quelques heures seulement après la victoire spectaculaire 2-1 de McGill contre Acadia lors d'un match éliminatoire disputé tôt le matin au Gary Carter Field, mettant fin à une journée éprouvante ponctuée de deux matchs consécutifs à gagner absolument. Les Redbirds ont terminé le tournoi avec une fiche de 2-2 et ont clôturé leur saison indépendante avec une fiche globale de 11-18.
Carleton (3-1) a marqué tous ses points en deuxième manche contre le lanceur partant de McGill, William Greer (0-1), qui a concédé six coups sûrs et quatre points (dont seulement deux mérités) en 3,1 manches. Le joueur de première année originaire de Point Edward, en Ontario, a retiré un frappeur sur prises et accordé un but sur balles avant que Tate Spence ne prenne la relève, lançant 2,2 manches sans coup sûr avec un but sur balles et un retrait sur prises.
Le gaucher des Ravens, Matthew Scott (1-0), a remporté la victoire, limitant McGill à un point non mérité sur cinq coups sûrs en six manches, tout en retirant un frappeur sur des prises, n'accordant aucun but sur balles et frappant deux frappeurs. Mike Millross a lancé une septième manche sans point pour obtenir le sauvetage.

Les Redbirds ont terminé avec cinq coups sûrs et une erreur, tandis que Carleton a réussi six coups sûrs et une erreur.
Cette défaite a marqué la dernière apparition universitaire de quatre véterans de McGill : les lanceurs Donovan Worrall (neurosciences) et Marcus Dela Cruz (informatique et économie), le voltigeur Nathaniel Factor (génie informatique) et le premier but Vincent Rizzolo (kinésiologie).
