MONTREAL – The McGill University Redbirds have qualified for the Canadian university invitational baseball championship, a four-day, eight-team tournament set for Oct. 16-20 in Montreal.

The Redbirds, who finished with a 9-16 record during their independent schedule this season, will open the tourney on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against the Carleton Ravens (21-9), silver medalists from Ontario University Athletics. The game will be played at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park, located in Côte St. Luc, Que.

McGill was 2-7 in nine meetings with the Ravens this season, including 9-1 and 11-3 victories.

The Redbirds will send Tate Spence, a 5-foot-6, 155-pound southpaw to the mound against the defending national champion Ravens, who feature a lineup loaded with lefthanded hitters. The 19-year-old kinesiology sophomore from Salmon Arm, B.C., had a 2-1 record in six appearances with a 3.49 earned run average this season. In 28 innings of work, he struck out 33 batters, while while allowing 30 hits and walking just seven.

"Tate performed well against Carleton's left-handed hitters this season," said Chris Haddad, a former McGill catcher now in his second season as the team's head coach and field manager. "We're hoping that he can throw them off balance with the way he delivers the ball. He's not overpowering but the ball moves."

Thursday's other opening-round matchup will feature the OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues (17-3) taking on the Université de Montréal Carabins (2-8) at 7:30 p.m. at Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard.

Rounding out the field are the Atlantic conference champion Dalhousie Tigers (10-5), the Western Mustangs (12-6), the Acadia Axemen (7-6) and the Guelph Gryphons (14-3), all of whom begin play on Friday.

The championship will follow a double-elimination format, meaning no team will be eliminated until it has lost twice. This system ensures that each squad has the opportunity to battle back through the consolation bracket, creating the potential for a team to win the title with as few as four victories or as many as seven games if it drops its opener. Games will be staged at two venues — Gary Carter Field at Trudeau Park in Côte St. Luc and Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard in Montreal — with home and away teams determined by a coin toss.

Tournament standings and results will be posted on the GameChanger app.

This marks McGill's 11th lifetime appearance at Nationals, where the Redbirds have captured six national titles and compiled a 39-11 record overall. Previous appearances include 2019 (2-2), 2018 (5-0), *2017 (5-0), *2016 (4-1), *2015 (5-0), *2014 (4-1), 2012 (2-2), *2010 (4-2), 2008 (3-3) and *2006 (5-0), with asterisks denoting championship seasons.

McGill participera au Championnat universitaire de baseball à Montréal, du 16 au 19 octobre

MONTRÉAL – Les Redbirds de l'Université McGill se sont qualifiés pour le Championnat universitaire canadien de baseball, un tournoi invitation de quatre jours réunissant huit équipes qui se tiendra du 16 au 20 octobre à Montréal.

Les Redbirds, qui ont terminé la saison avec une fiche de 9-16 dans leur calendrier indépendant, débuteront le tournoi jeudi à 19 h 30 contre les Ravens de Carleton (21-9), médaillés d'argent de l'Ontario University Athletics. Le match se déroulera au Gary Carter Field, dans le parc Trudeau, situé à Côte Saint-Luc, au Québec.

McGill a enregistré un bilan de 2-7 en neuf rencontres contre les Ravens cette saison, dont des victoires 9-1 et 11-3.

Les Redbirds enverront Tate Spence, un gaucher de 1,68 m et 70 kg, sur le monticule contre les Ravens, champions nationaux en titre, qui alignent une formation composée principalement de frappeurs gauchers. Cet étudiant de deuxième année en kinésiologie âgé de 19 ans, originaire de Salmon Arm, en Colombie-Britannique, a enregistré un bilan de 2-1 en six apparitions avec une moyenne de points mérités de 3,49 cette saison. En 28 manches lancées, il a retiré 33 frappeurs sur des prises, tout en concédant 30 coups sûrs et seulement sept buts sur balles.

« Tate a bien performé contre les frappeurs gauchers de Carleton cette saison », a déclaré Chris Haddad, ancien receveur de McGill qui en est à sa deuxième saison en tant qu'entraîneur-chef et gérant de l'équipe. « Nous espérons qu'il pourra les déstabiliser avec sa façon de lancer la balle. Il n'est pas très puissant, mais la balle bouge. »

L'autre match du premier tour de jeudi opposera les Varsity Blues de Toronto (17-3), champions de l'OUA, aux Carabins de l'Université de Montréal (2-8) à 19 h 30 au Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard.

Les Tigers de Dalhousie (10-5), champions de la conférence Atlantique, les Mustangs de Western (12-6), les Axemen d'Acadia (7-6) et les Gryphons de Guelph (14-3) complètent le tableau et commenceront tous à jouer vendredi.

Le championnat se déroulera selon un format à double élimination, ce qui signifie qu'aucune équipe ne sera éliminée avant d'avoir perdu deux fois. Ce système garantit à chaque équipe la possibilité de se rattraper dans le tableau de consolation, ce qui permet à une équipe de remporter le titre avec seulement quatre victoires ou jusqu'à sept matchs si elle perd son premier match. Les matchs se dérouleront sur deux sites : le Gary Carter Field au parc Trudeau à Côte St. Luc et le Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard à Montréal. Les équipes qui joueront à domicile et à l'extérieur seront déterminées par un tirage au sort.

Le classement et les résultats du tournoi seront publiés sur l'application GameChanger.

Il s'agit de la 11e participation de McGill aux championnats nationaux, où les Redbirds ont remporté six titres nationaux et compilé un bilan global de 39-11.
