CÔTE ST. LUC, Que. — McGill's bats came alive too late as the Redbirds dropped their opener at the Canadian university invitational baseball championship, falling 5–3 to Carleton on Thursday night at Gary Carter Field in Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park.
The defending champion Ravens broke open a tight 1–0 game with a four-run outburst in the fifth inning, then held off a furious McGill rally in the seventh. The Redbirds (0–1) loaded the bases and plated two runs to narrow the deficit, but closer Will Zurell induced a called third strike to end the threat and earn the save.
Carleton starter Nathan Van Putten (1–0) struck out 11 and scattered five hits over 6.1 innings. The right-hander walked two, hit two batters and was charged with all three runs. Zurell came on for the final two outs, yielding one hit and fanning one.
McGill counterpart Tate Spence (0–1) kept pace early, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing four runs — all earned — on three hits. He struck out six but struggled with command, issuing four walks over 102 pitches. Robert Passmore-Waugh and Donovan Worrall combined for the final 1.2 innings, surrendering one run on two hits and four walks.
McGill jumped ahead 1–0 in the fourth inning when William Durnford walked, stole second and scored on Eli Brisman's sharp single to centre. But the Ravens responded in the fifth as Sal Lima tied the game with an RBI single before Carter Smith, Brayden Bult and Quinten McRae each drove in runs to make it 4–1. Carleton tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Jordan Cruz singled home Eric Blamauer.
The Redbirds refused to fold, loading the bases in the seventh on a Brisman single, a hit-by-pitch to Alex Strapko, and Gabriel Reque-Cruz's second hit of the game. Noah Marr and Steffler each brought in runs to cut the lead to 5–3, but that was as close as McGill would get.
Reque-Cruz (2-for-4) and Brisman (2-for-3) led McGill's six-hit effort, while Blamauer (2-for-3, RBI) paced Carleton's five-hit output. McGill committed three errors while Carleton had no defensive miscues.
The Redbirds return to action Friday in a 2:30 p.m. matinee at Gary Carter Field, facing elimination against the loser of the morning Dalhousie–Guelph matchup. McGill will turn to ace William Greer, a political science freshman from Point Edward, Ont., who went 4–1 with one save this season, striking out 36 in 29 innings while allowing just seven earned runs on 16 hits.

Les Ravens, champions en titre, ont débloqué un match serré (1-0) en marquant quatre points dans la cinquième manche, puis ont résisté à une remontée furieuse de McGill dans la septième manche. Les Redbirds (0-1) ont rempli les bases et marqué deux points pour réduire l'écart, mais le lanceur de relève Will Zurell a provoqué un troisième prise pour mettre fin à la menace et obtenir le sauvetage.
