MONTREAL –
Matthew Beaudet of the McGill University men's track and field team collected his third gold medal of the weekend, broke a school record and was named as conference athlete of the year as the RSEQ championship wrapped up Saturday at Tomlinson Fieldhouse.
The McGill Redbirds produced 10 podium finishes, three of them golden, along with four silvers and three bronze medals. All gold medalists automatically qualify for the national championships and merit RSEQ first-team all-star honours, while silver medalists earn second-team honours.
Laval captured the men's title for the ninth consecutive season, finishing first of nine schools with 205 points. The Montreal Carabins were second with 148, followed by
McGill (118), Sherbrooke (68), Carleton (40), UQTR (22), Concordia (15), UQAC (8) and UQAM (2).
Yassine Aber of the Carabins was named male athlete of the meet. Other major award recipients included Sherbrooke's
Felix Quirion (rookie of the year) and Laval's
Mathieu Masse-Pelletier, who won the conference's leadership award, as well as the top field performance of the year.
Beaudet, also won the conference award for the individual track performance of the year. An electrical engineering junior who turns 23 on Feb. 28, he showed no sign of jet lag after returning from Australia earlier in the week, where he ran for Canada at the world cross-country championship. The 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner from Montreal's NDG borough, was the second-highest scorer at the meet, accounting for 20 of McGill's 118 points. He won the 3,000-metre race on Saturday, crossing the finish line in a school record time of eight minutes, 18.75 seconds. That erased the previous mark of 8:18.79 that he set at the McGill Team Challenge last month. Beaudet struck gold twice on Friday, finishing first in the 1,500m (3:50.35) and running the anchor leg of McGill's winning 4x800 relay (7:40.03).
The winning relay foursome also featured
Sebastian Danson, a computer science senior from Toronto in the leadoff spot, followed by De Paul University transfer
Jules Gueguen, an economics major who hails from France, and
Markus Geiger, a management junior from Toronto.
Among McGill's silver-medalists was
Kilty McGonigal from Deux-Montagnes, Que., and
Olivier Gregoire of St. Aubert, Que.
McGonigal, a civil engineering sophomore, collected 4,415 points to win the heptathlon, while Gregoire, an arts and science sophomore, cleared a height of 4.30m in the pole vault.
The final two silver medal finishes went to the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. The first quartet, which finished in 1:30.72, featured leadoff sprinter
Ricardo Percopo, a mechanical engineering junior from Boisbroiand, Que.,
Paul Mandelos, a science junior from TMR, Que.,
Alexander Crooks, an economics freshman from Montreal and
Jules Barrieu, a physics senior from Manhattan Beach, Calif.
The other relay (3:22.23) was composed of Percopo, Barrieu, Crooks and
Markus Geiger, a management junior from Toronto.
Geiger (1000m) and Crooks (high jump) also collected bronze medals, along with
Mark Schulz (long jump), a physical education senior from Howick, Que.
Next on the agenda is the U SPORTS national championships, slated for Saskatoon, March 9-11.
