MONTREAL –
Donna Ntambue of Montreal, won gold and bronze medals to pace the McGill University women's track and field team to a third-place finish as the RSEQ championship wrapped up Saturday at Tomlinson Fieldhouse.
The McGill Martlets produced six podium finishes, three of them golden, along with a pair of silvers and one bronze. All gold medalists automatically qualify for the national championships and merit RSEQ first-team all-star honours, while silver medalists earn second-team honours.
Laval captured the women's title for the fifth consecutive season, finishing first of nine schools with 260 points. The Montreal Carabins were second with 160, followed by
McGill (103), Sherbrooke (79), Carleton (14), UQTR (10), UQAM (4), UQAC (3) and Concordia (0).
Laval's
Jessy Lacourse was named female athlete of the meet, as well as the conference's athlete of the year and the track performance of the year honours. Laval teammates also collected some major awards, with
Frederique Chiasson (rookie of the year) and
Audrey Leduc, who won the top field performance of the year honour. The conference's leadership award went to UQTR's
Marie-Helene Valliere.
Ntambue, a fleet-footed, 5-foot-9 sprinter who turns 22 on Feb. 26, won the elite 60-metre sprint in 7.47 seconds, fractions short of her school record (7.38) set last month at the McGill Team Challenge. The first-year economics major also ran leadoff on the bronze-medal winning 4x200m relay which crossed the finish line in 1:42.96. That was just off their team record pace of 1:41.18, set last month. In addition, Ntambue placed sixth in the 300m, crossing the finish line in 40.99 seconds, just shy of the school record of 39.48.
Teammates on the relay included a pair of sophomores from Vancouver,
Lola Ross-McLennan (industrial relations) and
Bethany Walton-Knight (physics), who ran the anchor leg, along with
Vanessa Lu Langley (engineering) from Ottawa. Lu Langley also claimed silver in the 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.12 seconds.
McGill's other gold medal performances came from
Rosalie Lupien in the pole vault and
Ella Villeneuve in the weight-throw.
Lupien, a 22-year-old economics junior from Longueuil, Que., cleared a height of 3.30 metres, to match her personal best. Villeneuve, a 19-year-old science freshman from Richmond, Vt., registered a toss of 12.78m.
The Martlets other podium finish came from
Makayla Mitchell, a pharmacology senior from Nanaimo, B.C., who claimed silver in the pentathlon with a combined score of 3,029 points, a personal best.
Next on the agenda is the U SPORTS national championships, slated for Saskatoon, March 9-11.
