MONTREAL –
Donna Ntambue of Montreal, won gold and bronze medals to pace the McGill women's track and field team on Day 1 of the RSEQ university championships, held at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Friday.

With one day remaining in the meet, Laval is running away from the eight-team field in the women's division with 148 points, well ahead of the second-place Montreal Carabins (72).  McGill (64) sits third, followed by Sherbrooke (34), Carleton (4), UQAC (3), UQTR (0) and Concordia (0).

Ntambue, a fleet-footed, 5-foot-9 sprinter who turns 22 on Feb. 26, won the elite 60-metre sprint in 7.47 seconds, fractions short of her school record (7.38) set last month at the McGill Team Challenge.

A transfer from the NCAA, the first-year economics major also ran leadoff on the bronze-medal winning 4x200m relay which crossed the finish line in 1:42.96. That was just off their team record pace of 1:41.18, set last month. Teammates on the relay included a pair of sophomores from Vancouver,
Lola Ross-McLennan (industrial relations) and
Bethany Walton-Knight (physics), who ran the anchor leg, along with
Vanessa Lu Langley (engineering) from Ottawa.

McGill's other gold medal performance came from
Rosalie Lupien, a 22-year-old economics junior from Longueuil, Que. The 5-foot-3 multi-purpose athlete won the pole vault after clearing a height of 3.30 metres, to match her personal best.
All gold medalists automatically qualify for the upcoming U SPORTS national championships in Saskatoon, March 9-11.

The Martlets other podium finish came from
Makayla Mitchell, a pharmacology senior from Nanaimo, B.C., who claimed silver in the pentathlon with a combined score of 3,029 points, a personal best.

The RSEQ championship meet concludes on Saturday (
