MONTREAL – Matthew Beaudet of NDG, Que., won a pair of gold medals to pace the McGill men's track and field team on Day 1 of the RSEQ university championships, held at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Friday.

Laval leads the eight team men's division with 77 points, followed by Montreal (67), McGill (44), Sherbrooke (35), Carleton (29), UQTR (14), Concordia (12) and UQAC (8).

Beaudet, an electrical engineering junior who turns 23 on Feb. 28, had returned earlier this week from a whirlwind trip to Australia where he helped Canada finish eighth at the world cross-country championships. He finished first in the 1500-metre race and ran the anchor leg of McGill's winning 4x800 relay. His time in the 1500m was three minutes, 50.35 seconds, a bit shy of his school record 3:48.01 set last month at the McGill Team Challenge.

The winning relay foursome also featured Sebastian Danson, a computer science senior from Toronto in the leadoff spot, followed by De Paul University transfer Jules Gueguen, an economics major who hails from France, and Markus Geiger, a management junior from Toronto. They crossed the finish line in 7:40.03, which missed the team record by 1.07 seconds.

The McGill Redbirds also posted a pair of silver medal finishes. Sophomore Olivier Gregoire of St. Aubert, Que., tied for first in the pole vault but settled for second after requiring more jumps to clear a height of 4.30 metres. The other podium was in the 4x200m relay, which was clocked in 1:30.72 seconds. That quartet included sophomore Ricardo Percopo of Boisbriand, Que., in the leadoff leg, followed by junior Paul Mandelos of TMR, Que., freshman Montrealer Alexander Crooks and Jules Barrieu, a senior from Manhattan Beach, Calif.

The RSEQ championship meet concludes on Saturday (SEE COMPLETE SCHEDULE ).
