VICTORIA, BC –
Pablo Collin won gold for the McGill University men's swim team on opening day of the U SPORTS national championships.
Collin, a 21-year-old computer science sophomore from Marseille, France, won the 400-metre freestyle in three minutes, 57.71 seconds. He edged out Toronto's
Quinn Matteis, who settled for silver in 3:58.69. Collin also anchored the 4x100 medley relay, which finished sixth.
After Day 1, McGill sits fourth of 19 teams in both the men's and the women's divisions. The RSEQ champions qualified a school record 35 swimmers for Nationals, including 19 women.
Other leading results from the "A" finals for the McGill men included Abu Dhabi native
Hazem Issa (5th, 50m free; and 7th, 100 fly),
Erik Linseisen (6th, 200 IM) of Burlington, Vt.,
Alex Younes (7th, 200 IM) of Montreal,
Romain Vanmoen (8th, 100 back) of Menton, France, and the sixth-place finishing 4x100 medley relay, which included Vanmoen,
Brian Yu of Beijing,
Riccardo Camuso of Milan and the aforementioned Collin.
On the women's side, McGill just missed three podiums, with fourth-place finishes by
Isabel Sarty (50 free) of Halifax,
