KINGSTON, ONT – Two players from the McGill University women's soccer team have merited All-Canadian status.
Mara Bouchard of Granby, Que., and
Stephanie Hill of Montreal were among 11 players to earn a berth on the U SPORTS first team. It marks the first time in 17 years that the McGill program has had two national laureates picked to the first team. The last occasion was in 2006, when Shari Fraser and Eloise Vandal were named. Including repeat winners, the Martlets have now have 56 All-Canadians named in team history (see list below).
Bouchard, a 5-foot-4 midfielder, earns first-team honours this year after making the second squad last season. She started all 14 regular season games and while kept off the scoresheet, was selected a team-leading five times as McGill's player of the game. A shutdown defensive player, the 22-year-old psychology junior was named an RSEQ conference all-star for the third consecutive year since receiving the conference rookie-of-the-year award in 2021.
Hill, a 5-foot-11 defender, scored once in 14 contests and was named once as the team's player of the game. Shee to was an RSEQ first-team all-star for the third consecutive year. After graduating with a science degree last spring, the 21-year-old returned this year for a master's degree in applied physical therapy.
Katalin Tolnai, a fourth-year forward from UBC, was named the U SPORTS player of the year. Provost, who is from Toronto, becomes the third T-Bird to take the Chantal Navert Memorial Award, after Jasmin Dhanda in 2017 and Sarah Regan, who shared the award in 2003. Other national award winners announced during the All-Canadian Banquet held in Kingston, Ont. were UBC defender
Sarah Rollins, who was named rookie of the year;
Hannah Miller of Trinity Western, who won the Student-Athlete Community Service Award; and StFX head coach
Graham Kennedy, who was honoured by his peers as the Fox40 coach of the year.
The 2023 U SPORTS championship gets underway Thursday at the Richardson Stadium and culminates Sunday with the national championship game at 3 p.m. Eastern. All 11 games from the eight-team tournament will be webcast live on CBC digital platforms in English, along with RadioCanada.ca/Sports and USPORTS.ca in French.
