Issa scores golden hat-trick as McGill men dominate second University Cup swim meet


SHERBROOKE, QUE – Hazem Issa of Cairo, in Egypt, was named swimmer of the meet as the McGill men's swim team finished first of six schools to capture the second Quebec University Cup competition of the season, held Saturday, at the Université de Sherbrooke's short-course pool.
 
It was the fourth consecutive meet victory in RSEQ competition for the defending conference champion Redbirds, including the final two of the 2022-23 season.
 
In 10 races, the McGill men produced seven gold medal finishes, to go along with three silvers and six bronzes. They collected 546.5 points in the team scoring. Ottawa was a distant second with 349.5, followed by Laval (280.5), Montreal (133), Sherbrooke (102) and UQTR (41.5).
 
Issa, a 21-year-old civil engineering junior, won three gold medals and one silver, qualifying for the U SPORTS championship in each event. The imposing 6-foot-5, 212-pound sprinter won the 50-metre freestyle (22.85) and guided McGill to victories in both the 4x100 medley relay (3:43.65) and 4x100 freestyle relay (3:21.52). His silver medal performance occurred in the 100 butterfly, which finished in a dead heat with teammate Tristan Govier, a 17-year-old computer engineering freshman from West Vancouver, B.C. Both were clocked at 55.10 seconds.Grovier was also part of a gold medal effort in the 4x100 MR.
 
Double gold medal performances were produced by Malachy Belkhelladi  (200 free, 1:51.21; 4x100 free relay), a 20-year-old psychology junior from Montreal and Bruno Dehem-Lemelin (4x100 MR, 4x100 free), a civil engineering senior from Kirkland, Que.
 
Rounding out the single gold efforts was Erik Linseisen (4x100 free) of Burlington, Vt., Mats Baradat (1500 free, 15:52.61), a native of France, Alex Younes (400 IM, 4:28.44) of Montreal, Riccardo Camuso (200 back; 2:06.48) of Milan, Italy and Steve Frantskevich (4x100 MR) of Markham, Ont.
 
The third of five RSEQ University Cup meets is scheduled for No. 11 at the university of Ottawa.
