MONTREAL –
Martin Laval, a native of Biarritz, in southwestern France, scored 20 points on a rainy afternoon as McGill defeated visiting Bishop's 25-15 in the RSEQ men's rugby regular season finale at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.
The result cemented a third-place playoff berth for McGill (4-2) and eliminated Bishop's (3-3) from post-season play. The Gaiters finished fifth in the seven-team conference, just behind both McGill and fourth-place Concordia (3-3).
Laval, a 5-foot-11, 182-pound outside centre, posted an impressive 6-for-8 performance on penalty kicks, and converted the lone Redbirds try, which was scored by
Alexander Armstrong in just the third minute of play.
Marshall Mather scored a pair of tries for Bishop's and
Axel Montgomery added five points on a penalty kick and one conversion.
McGill will travel to second-place Ottawa (4-2) on Sunday (Oct. 27) for a sudden-death semifinal game in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Terrain Matt Anthony. At the same time, the league's other semifinal will pit fourth-seeded Concordia against division-leading and undefeated ETS (6-0).
