MONTREAL – Goalkeeper
Sophie Guilmette of Montreal, registered a six-save shutout, including a huge stop late in the game, as the visiting McGill women's soccer team battled UQAM to a 0-0 deadlock, Friday, at Stade Saputo.
It was McGill's first scoreless draw in 19 regular season contests, dating back to a stalemate at Bishop's on Sept. 26, 2021.
The third-place Citadins improved to 4-1-3 in the eight-team RSEQ conference, two points ahead of McGill, which now sits fourth at 4-3-1.
"We played really well, came prepared to play against a competitive team that had just defeated first-place Laval," said a very pleased Martlets bench boss
Jose-Luis Valdes, who was the recipient of a yellow card for questioning a missed call by the referee. It was only the second caution that Valdes had ever received behind the McGill bench and the first since he was a goalkeeper coach with the team in 2004.
"We moved the ball well, were smart and efficient defensively, and up top we were dangerous, " noted Valdes. "Our structure and ball movement was good. It was probably our best all-around game this season. I saw clear progress in our group, especially compared to how we played against UQAM in the season opener (a 2-1 loss at Molson Stadium)."
The Martlets missed two glorious scoring opportunities in the second half when both
Stephanie Hill and
Thalia Krauth-Ibarz hit the cross bar.
Both teams are back in action on Sunday (Oct. 2). McGill will host Bishop's (1-4-3) in a 1 p.m. start, while UQAM will host Concordia (1-4-3) at 3:30 p.m. The McGill-Bishop's confrontation will be available on the McGill Streaming Network.
(NOTE: More detailed statistics were not available from the host school but will will be updated here when available).
