Weatherall paces offence as rugged rugby Redbirds run past Ottawa

MONTREAL – Monty Weatherall scored a game-high 11 points and four different McGill players tallied tries in a 31-19 men's rugby victory over visiting Ottawa before a boisterous crowd of 1,044 at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

McGill earned an extra bonus point in the RSEQ conference standings, awarded to teams that register four tries or lose by seven points or less . The Redbirds improved to 2-0, keeping pace with Bishop's (2-0).  Ottawa dropped to 1-1 and sits fifth in the eight-team league.

Weatherall converted all four majors and added a penalty kick. The team leading in scoring, he now ranks third among the RSEQ scoring leaders with 25 points in two contests, three points behind league leader Tom Saurin of ETS and one behind Axel Montgomery of Bishop's.

The Redbirds held a narrow 10-5 lead at halftime but won a wide-open second stanza by a 21-14 margin.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill, with one try apiece was Ferreol Amigues, Zachary Auger, Alexandre Laurendeau and Alexander Pantis.

Replying with tries for the Gee-Gees was Graeme Neill-Klein, who also drew the game's only yellow card, plus Theo Espangnoland Connor Williams . Completing the points for the visitors was Jamie Armstrong, who converted two of the three tries.

Next weekend, Ottawa (1-1) will host Bishop's (2-0) on Sept. 24 at 4 p.m., while undefeated McGill (2-0) heads across town to take on winless Concordia (0-2) on Sept. 25 with a 12 noon kickoff.
