MONTREAL --
Jorden Savoury of LaSalle, Que., won gold and silver medals, while shattering a school sprint record for the fourth time this season to highlight a solid outing for the McGill track and field women's team at the Redbird Last Chance qualifying meet, a two-day event held at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, March 11-12.
In a competition that featured athletes from 11 universities, eight of them from Quebec, there was no team scoring. The McGill women posted two gold-medal performances, along with three silvers and a pair of bronzes. On the men's side, McGill produced 16 podium finishes, with two golds, seven silvers and seven bronzes.
Savoury, a 23-year-old psychology senior, broke her own school record in a 60-metre race for the fourth time this season. The speedy, 5-foot-8 sprinter crossed the finish line in a sizzling 7.47 seconds to finish atop the podium, ahead of Laval teammates
Sarah Dulude-Bellavance (7.73) and
Fiola Tejiofo (7.74)
Savoury's time surpassed the 4.50 McGill standard that she set at the York Open in Toronto, Feb. 11-12. According to
trackie.ca, which tracks all performances across the country, her time ranks as the second-fastest 60m race by a Canadian university athlete this season, tied with Guelph's
Zoe Sherar (7.47). The duo ranks just behind Guelph's
Jacqueline Madogo (7.39), which slots Savoury in a favourable position for medal contention at the Nationals, slated for St. John, N.B., Mar. 31 to April 2..
Savoury's silver-medal performance was in the women's 4x200m, clocked at 1:42.95, which narrowly missed the McGill record of 1:41.25. She anchored a foursome, that also included sophomore
Vanessa Lu Langley and freshman
Audrey Gilmour, both natives of Ottawa, and
Bethany Walton-Knight, a freshman from Vancouver, B.C.
Gilmour, an 18-year-old arts and science freshman, also ran the third leg of the 4x400m relay, which won gold in 4:03.96. That quartet featured leadoff runner
Marianne Djigo, an anatomy junior from Regina, Sask.,
Chloe Morrison, a biomedical science freshman from Stonewall, Man., and anchor
Eden Muyard, a native of France, majoring in environmental biology.
The RSEQ championship meet is next on the schedule, a two-day competition at Sherbrooke, Mar. 19-20.
