MONTREAL --
Matthew Beaudet of Montreal and
Nicolas Bernard from Scarsdale, N.Y., each won gold medals to pace the McGill men's track and field team at the Redbird Last Chance qualifying meet, a two-day event held at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, March 11-12.
Beaudet, a 5-foot-9 distance runner, captured the 1000-metres in two minutes, 26.70 seconds. The 22-year-old electrical engineering sophomore just missed the McGill record of 2:25.51. Teammate
Markus Geiger, a sophomore
from Toronto, was second in
2:27.53, while
Jude Wheeler-Dee of the Queen's Gaels finished third in 2:27.96.
Bernard, a 6-foot-1, middle-distance specialist, also missed a school mark while winning the 600m. The 20-year-old management junior won the race in 1:20.83, just off the team record of 1:19.47. It was a McGill podium sweep, with
A.J. Bimm, a master's student from Brampton, Ont., finishing a fraction behind in a photo finish time of 1:20.87.
Sebastian Danson, a sophomore from Toronto, placed third in 1:21.99.
Bernard also anchored the 4x400m relay, which finished third in 3:20.59. Joining him in that foursome was Geiger, Danson and Bimm.
The McGill men produced 16 podium finishes, with two golds, seven silvers and seven bronzes in a competition that featured athletes from 11 universities, eight of them from Quebec. There was no team scoring. On the women's side, McGill also collected a pair gold-medal performances, to go along with three silvers and a pair of bronzes.
Next on the schedule is the RSEQ championship, a two-day meet at Sherbrooke, Mar. 19-20.
