Watchful Weatherall whips up warm front as rugby Redbirds sink Sherbrooke

MONTREAL – Monty Weatherall scored a game-high 20 points to pace the McGill men's rugby team to a convincing 52-5 conquest over visiting Sherbrooke in men's rugby at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

McGill, which improved to 4-1, scored seven tries in the contest to earn a bonus point in the RSEQ conference standings for the sixth time this season. That puts the Redbirds atop a three-way tie for the division lead with Ottawa and ETS, each with identical 4-1 records but McGill currently has the tie-breaker on bonus points. Only two games remain before post-season play.

It was the second time this season that McGill had reached the 50-point plateau, a mark last achieved in the season opening 56-3 win at Carleton on Sept. 10.

Weatherall, a six-foot, 183-pound fly-half, accounted for one try, six conversions and a penalty kick. He is a native of Amersham, located about 50 kilometres west of London, in the UK. The McGill team captain, who turns 22 on Oct. 12, is a senior majoring in international development studies.

His offensive outburst against Sherbrooke, moves Weatherall into a tie for first in the league scoring race with Tom Saurin of ETS. Both have racked up 58 points, although Weatherall has missed one game. The McGillian has tallied 22 conversions, three penalty goals and one try.

Teammate Alex Pantis added a pair of tries, while other majors were scored by Henry Carr, Elliot Descarreaux, Nicolas Dube-Mercier and Alexandre Laurendeau. Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Nicolas Tissier, who converted one try.

The lone Vert & Or scoring play was an uncoverted try scored by Remi Archambault.

Sherbrooke, which dropped to 0-5, remains tied with winless Carleton (0-5) for last place in the eight-team league and will host the Ravens on Oct. 16.

That same day, McGill (4-1) will host ETS (4-1) in a 12 noon kickoff, before wrapping up the regular season against Bishop's on Oct. 23. Both contests are slated for  Molson Stadium.
